NATCHITOCHES -- Northwestern State pitcher
Mikayla Brown was named the Louisiana Pitcher of the Week announced Tuesday by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
The sophomore had arguably her best outing of the season Saturday when she threw a two-hitter in a 1-0 shutout of previously undefeated McNeese.
Â
The Deville native carried a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings while striking out five.
Â
The Buckeye High alum worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning and stranded a runner on second base in the seventh inning to preserve her fourth shutout of the season, this one coming against the statistically best offense in the Southland Conference.
Â
Brown lowered her season ERA to 3.43 after the shutout, which includes five runs (four earned) in her last five outings (21 innings).
Â
She improved to 8-9 on the season after winning her fourth straight start.
Â
Brown has been the winning pitcher in victories against Abilene Christian and McNeese, those teams only conference losses (both have 11-1 marks).
Â
The right-hander is coming off an ACL injury that forced her to miss most of the 2016 season after winning the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year as a freshman in 2015.
Â
NSU hosts ULM on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before welcoming in Incarnate Word in only the Lady Demons' second home conference series.
