CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee -- Northwestern State softball couldn't protect a eight-run lead Sunday as UT Martin scored eight runs in the final three innings in a 9-8 Lady Demons' loss in the Frost Classic finale.
Â
Just three of UTM's eight runs were earned as the Lady Demons committed a season-high five errors.
Â
UTM's Rachel Williams provided a bases-loaded single to walk off the Lady Demons (7-8-1) in the seventh inning.
Â
The Skyhawks (11-2) plated five runs in the sixth inning with three unearned. A
Micayla Sorosiak fielding error allowed the first run to score before Carly Gonzalez and Alli Fulcher produced 2 RBI doubles to tie the game with two outs.
Â
NSU starter
Mikayla Brown allowed just one unearned in the first four innings before UTM scored seven in the next two innings.
Â
Brown finished with seven runs allowed (two earned) on three hits, three walks and two hit by pitches. The Deville native tied a season-high with six strikeouts.
Â
Reliever
Katelyn Boles (3-3) entered an 8-6 game in the sixth inning with a runner on second base and no outs, and Fulcher (2-for-4, 4 RBIs) tied the game four batters later.
Â
In the loss, Boles allowed two runs (one earned) in 1 2-3 innings.
Â
UTM's first three runs were all unearned after consecutive errors (
Toni Hebert and
Madelyn Matt) brought home one fourth-inning run.
Â
An
Adele Vincent throwing error contributed to Fulcher's first two-RBI single in the fifth inning to slice NSU's lead to 8-3.
Â
NSU built its lead on the strength of home runs by Sorosiak and
Brittney Jones.
Â
Sorosiak's second career grand slam was part of a five-run fourth inning started by freshman
Elise Vincent's RBI single to score Hebert (lead off single).
Â
Vincent, junior
Sidney Salmans (singled) and senior
Kellye Kincannon (walked) trotted home on Sorosiak's grand slam, her first since 2015 against Houston Baptist.
Â
Jones continued to plow through her early-season slump with a three-run home run in the first inning.
Jones has hit all four of her home runs this weekend and is tied for the team lead (four) with Sorosiak.
Â
Vincent and Kincannon scored, and Kincannon climbed to third on NSU's career charts with 134 runs scored.
Â
With a single in the first inning, Kincannon tied Cassandra Barefield for the program lead with 375 total bases.
Â
UTM starter Sara Hooten entered the game with just three runs (two earned) allowed in 19 2-3 innings, but Hooten gave up seven runs in 3 1-3 innings Sunday.
Â
Skyhawks pitcher Seeley Lane (1-0) picked up the win in her first extended action of the season with three hitless innings.
