Â
GAINESVILLE, Florida -- The Northwestern State softball team brought Mardi Gras to the Sunshine State as the Lady Demons hosted a hit parade in a 13-2 run-rule win against Maryland to kick off Florida's Aquafina Invitational.
Â
The 13 runs on 12 hits in the six-inning game tied season highs from its opening weekend.
Â
Seniors
Kellye Kincannon and
Micayla Sorosiak and sophomore
Kaylee Isenburg all recorded three RBIs, topping NSU's combined two three-RBI games from its first five contests.
Â
The win over a Power Five member is the third (Mississippi State, Oklahoma State) since the beginning of 2016, its first victories since beating Mississippi State in 2013.
Â
The Lady Demons will face No. 1 Florida in a scheduled 5 p.m. start.
Â
NSU (4-2) exploded for seven runs in the second inning as eight consecutive Lady Demons came to the plate without recording an out.
Â
"The great start was huge for our offense as we got some big hits with runners in scoring position," said NSU coach
Donald Pickett, whose team hit 9-of-17 with runners in scoring position. "(Isenburg and Sorosiak) did a great job of delivering consistently throughout the game."

The Lady Demons will face No. 1 Florida in a scheduled 5 p.m. start.
Â
In the second inning, Kincannon's (three RBIs) bases-loaded triple capped the frame to score
Hayley Barbazon (walked),
Adele Vincent (RBI single) and
Sidney Salmans (RBI single) for a 7-1 lead.
Â
Sophomore
Kaylee Isenburg (3-for-4, three RBIs) started the scoring with her first two RBIs of the season, driving in
Micayla Sorosiak (doubled) and
Emma Hawthorne (reached on fielder's choice) for a 2-1 edge.
Â
Salmans (3-for-5, two RBIs) plated Isenburg, who scored two runs, for a 3-1 advantage.
Â
Vincent scored
Toni Hebert (hit-by-pitch), who went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a sacrifice bunt in her first collegiate start, for a 4-1 lead.
Â
All of those runs were credited to Maryland starter Ari Jarvis (0-3), who lasted just 1 1-3 innings.
Â
The runs were all redshirt sophomore
Mikayla Brown (2-2) needed as she held the Terrapins (0-7) to two runs on seven hits.
Â
Maryland had plenty of base runners with Brown walking four and hitting three other batters, but the Terrapins stranded 12 runners and hit just 3-of-18 with runners on base.
Â
"Brown wasn't sharp, but she battled through," Pickett said. "The defense did a really good job of making plays behind her and getting out of some innings."
Â
NSU continued to slather on the offense as Sorosiak hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning to lead 9-2.
Â
Sorosiak went 2-for-4 with three runs scored to add to her three RBIs. The second baseman is batting .429 with five of her six base hits going for extra bases.
Â
The Lady Demons added four more runs in the sixth inning to put the game away.
Â
A Sorosiak fielder's choice RBI proceeded a string of RBI singles by Isenburg, Hebert and Salmans.
Â
Kincannon scored on Sorosiak's at-bat, moving her into sole possession of fourth place in runs scored with 128. She passed Brittany Virgoe (2012-15).
