ABILENE, Texas – Northwestern State was able to overcome a slow start Friday in a win, but the Lady Demons couldn't replicate that feat Sunday at Abilene Christian.
The Wildcats scored three first-half goals en route to a 6-2 win.
The six goals allowed is the most in program history in a Southland Conference game, topping the previous mark of five last allowed in 2013 against Incarnate Word.
With ACU (5-7, 3-2 Southland Conference) already up 4-0, NSU freshman Yeaya Gamboa struck from outside the penalty box for a Lady Demon goal in the 59
th minute.
Gamboa has scored five goals this season, one short of team leader
Brittany Caserma.
Senior forward
Cache' Haley tacked on a late goal, her fourth of the season.
Haley beat ACU keeper Erin Smith in a 1-on-1 situation within the penalty box.
But the Lady Demons (5-7, 1-4 SLC) couldn't mount more of a comeback as NSU slides back to the bottom of the league standings with six conference games to go.
ACU's Chantal Kinsey scored two first-half goals after Dylan Owens supplied the opening salvo in the 15
th minute.
Megan Baer, Christina Arteaga and Sam Vestal scored ACU's second-half goals.
Abilene Christian had an 18-11 edge in shots and a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Alex Latham made three saves with six goals allowed in the loss.
Smith contributed two saves in the win.
An aggressive Wildcat squad was flagged for 15 offsides and generated nine corner kicks.
