Soccer aiming for weekend sweep with trip to McNeese on Sunday

LAKE CHARLES – Sophomore forward Brittany Caserma provided one of the more memorable moments of the 2015 season when she scored a goal just before colliding with the McNeese goalkeeper.

Caserma suffered a nasty contusion on her chin as a result, and the Lady Demons lost to the Cowgirls in overtime in Natchitoches.

Now NSU (4-5, 1-1 Southland Conference) is aiming to repay the favor with the Lady Demons head to a hungry McNeese (4-5, 0-2 SLC) on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match.

"Soccer is a very competitive sport, not just a sport where you don't expect to collide and bump into people," said Caserma, who's scored three goals this season. "It's very aggressive, and I'm one of those players.

"Colliding with the goalie – at the time it sucks – but looking back on it, it's funny and it makes a memory. There are times when you have to throw yourself out there, collide with people and get some goals."

Junior Shelby Drope delivered a 77th-minute goal to give a 1-0 win Friday at Lamar, their first SLC road win since 2014.  NSU hasn't won consecutive conference road games since 2006.

"Any away game win is always great," said junior goalkeeper Alex Latham. "We don't have the home crowd and our fans behind us on the road.

"But we created great opportunities Friday and got a goal to go in in the second half."

McNeese will attempt to recover from a 5-0 loss to Central Arkansas at home.

The Cowgirls have solid wins against Louisiana Tech and Texas State, but they've lost five of their last six matches.

Outside of UCA's five-goal performance, McNeese has held five of its other eight opponents to two goals or less.

"Sunday games are always really tough, and we lost a heartbreaker to them last year," said NSU coach George Van Linder. "Good teams win on Friday, championship teams win on Sunday.

"It's a great test for us."

McNeese scored six goals twice against Southwestern Athletic Conference opponents this season, but the Cowgirls have scored six goals in its other seven matches.

NSU's defense has been relatively strong this season, allowing eight goals in eight matches – not including an 8-0 loss to SMU.

The Lady Demons' four shutouts matches the 2014 total, and NSU hasn't had more than five in Van Linder's fifth season in Natchitoches.
