NATCHITOCHES – Twenty-one student-athletes with perfect grade point averages in the spring 2016 semester led more than 100 Northwestern State competitors on the Southland Conference Commissioner's Spring Honor Roll released Wednesday.
NSU was one of three institutions to place 101 members on the honor roll, which tied for sixth in the 13-team league and were tied for second among Louisiana's SLC membership. Incarnate Word's 147 honor roll members led the conference followed by Central Arkansas (126), Sam Houston State (114), McNeese State (107) and Abilene Christian (103).
NSU's total tied it with Southeastern Louisiana and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
A pair of Demons program set single-season GPA records while competing during the spring. The Demons baseball team posted a 3.12 GPA while Northwestern State's men's basketball team posted a cumulative 3.081 mark.
One of the 21 Demons and Lady Demons student-athletes who posted a 4.0 GPA in the spring has ties to both record-setting programs. True freshman
Colby Koontz, a biology major, posted a 4.0 while a member of both the men's basketball and baseball programs.
Among NSU student-athletes who posted 4.0 GPAs was senior guard Janelle Perez, a health and exercise science major and the 2015-16 Southland Conference Women's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year.
Perez was one of three women's basketball players to post a perfect semester, joined by fellow senior forward Meghan Cross (biology) and junior guard Beatrice Attura (business administration).
The Demons track and field team had seven student-athletes deliver 4.0 GPAs – junior distance runner Miles Brown (business administration), freshman distance runner Jacob Dahlhoff (health and physical education), freshman distance runner Dylan Dunford (health and exercise science), junior distance runner Jeremy Elliott (health and exercise science), junior distance runner Mitchell Landry (industrial engineering technology), sophomore jumper David Moritz (business administration) and 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field All-American senior long jumper Emmanuel Williams. (health and exercise science).
The Lady Demons track and field had five 4.0s – sophomore thrower Mariah Davis (biology), freshman jumper Tyra Duma (health and exercise science), freshman sprinter/hurdler Sarah Lewis (health and exercise science), sophomore sprinter Kylie Nodorft (health and exercise science) and sophomore distance runner Jacqueline Rushford (health and exercise science).
NSU softball had three perfect 4.0 GPAs – freshman pitcher Katelyn Boles (math education), sophomore catcher Kaytie Proctor (hospitality, tourism and management) and sophomore infielder Hailee Rhodes (business administration).
In addition to Koontz, redshirt sophomore men's basketball player Stan Mays (biology) had a 4.0. Women's tennis posted two 4.0 GPAs, including one by senior Academic All-American Natalya Krutova (biology) and sophomore Barbora Kollarova (business administration).
