Softball errors costly as Nicholls gets sweep

THIBODAUX --  Northwestern State committed a combined 10 errors Saturday that led to 11 unearned runs as the Colonels won two games to finish the series sweep.

Nicholls grabbed wins of 5-1 and 10-4 as NSU's losing streak extended to a season-high six games. The Colonels won the first game Friday 1-0 with Hannah Haydel's first career no-hitter.

NSU (24-22, 7-13 Southland Conference) committed a season-high seven errors in the finale, which is the most since coach Donald Pickett took over the program in 2009.

Four of those errors came in the first inning, leading to six Nicholls' runs to give them plenty of cushion. Three runs scored directly on errors while two more were plated on a Haley Stevenson triple.

Sophomore pitcher Micaela Bouvier didn't allow an earned run in the second game (all eight runs credited to her were unearned) on five hits in five innings. Bouvier committed two errors herself.

Combined with Friday's one-run effort, Bouvier pitched 11 innings with just one earned run allowed after surrendering  at least three earned runs in five of her previous six starts.

Down 6-0, NSU bounced back with three runs in the second inning to stay within striking distance.

Junior Kellye Kincannon drove in two runs with a single before freshman Kayla Roquemore scored a run on Nicholls' only error.

Nicholls responded with two more runs via an error and RBI-groundout to build an 8-3 lead, more than enough for Hannah Haydel (17-7) and Megan Landry (second save).

Roquemore, a Natchitoches native made her first career start in the second game, was one of NSU's few bright spots. She singled as part of NSU's three-run inning before hitting a triple in her next at-bat. She made multiple diving catches in left field as well.

Roquemore and fellow freshman Kaylee Isenburg each recorded two hits while Kincannon and senior Natalie Landry (RBI-single) accounted for NSU's two other hits in the second game.

Errors loomed large in the first game as well with three of Nicholls' five runs being unearned on three errors.

A Brittney Jones RBI-single provided NSU a 1-0 lead in the third inning, but Nicholls answered with an Alexis Huss sacrifice fly made possible by an error.

Nicholls takes a 3-1 lead with unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings before the Colonels struck for two runs in the sixth inning.

Junior pitcher Shelby Sells (9-11) allowed five runs (two earned) on eight hits and four walks.

Landry (14-6) picked up the win for Nicholls with one run on three hits in four innings. Haydel earned the save with three scoreless innings.

With two Southland Conference series remaining, NSU is currently out of the league tournament. Sam Houston State (8-12 SLC) moved into seventh place by going 1-2 at Abilene Christian and would be the No. 6 and final seed. ACU is ineligible for the league tournament.

The Lady Demons finish the regular season by hosting Stephen F. Austin this weekend and Southeastern in the final weekend.
