STARKVILLE, Miss. – Both Northwestern State's
Micaela Bouvier and Longwood's Elizabeth McCarthy tossed two-hitters in the circle, but Longwood squeezed an extra run out of a crucial error Friday afternoon to beat the Lady Demons 2-1 in NSU's opening game at the Mississippi State Bulldog Slamboree.
Longwood tied the game with a fourth-inning run scored on a
Micayla Sorosiak throwing error.
The Lancers (8-3) struck again in the seventh inning when Glenn Walters hit a two-out single to score Taylor Hedrick from second base. Hedrick reached base on a hit-by-pitch from Bouvier.
That was the only earned run Bouvier surrendered as she struck out five batters in the loss. She worked around four walks and one hit-by-pitch.
NSU scored in the second inning on a
Kaytie Proctor single, bringing home
Brittney Jones. Jones reached on all three plate appearances (two walks and a hit-by-pitch).
But the Lady Demons couldn't string together anything else, stranding six runners and hitting into two double plays.
Hailee Rhodes recorded NSU's only other hit, coming with two outs in the seventh inning. Sorosiak recorded a one-out walk to put two runners on after Rhodes' single, but
Michaela Johnson flied out to end the game.
McCarthy (4-2) struck out four, walked five and hit two batters in the win.
NSU plays Mississippi State tonight at 8:30 p.m.
