SAN ANTONIO, Texas – For a second straight game, defensive errors cost Northwestern State as Incarnate Word took the series finale 7-5 on Sunday to win the series two games to one.
The Lady Demons (16-7, 1-2 Southland Conference) committed five errors that led to four unearned runs Sunday one day after another four unearned runs helped UIW to a 6-5 win Saturday in eight innings.
With NSU leading 3-2, UIW (8-13, 2-1) exploded for four third-inning runs. Three runs were unearned because of two NSU errors.
The Lady Demons answered in the top of the fourth with solo home runs from
Kaytie Proctor and
Kellye Kincannon to cut UIW's lead to 6-5. But relievers Bridget Stein (4-3) and Sarah Leal (first save) combined to scatter four hits over the final three scoreless innings.
The series loss snapped 13 consecutive conference series wins for NSU, who hadn't lost an SLC series since dropping two games to Sam Houston State in early April of 2014.
UIW added an insurance run when a final NSU error set up a sacrifice fly that padded the Cardinals' lead to 7-5.
NSU outhit UIW 11-8, and both teams stranded nine runners.
Sophomore
Micaela Bouvier (9-3) takes the loss after allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks. Junior
Shelby Sells allowed one unearned run on four hits in her three innings.
Kincannon led NSU's offensive attack by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Senior
Natalie Landry and freshman
Kaylee Isenburg recorded two hits and an RBI each.
UIW's Alex Alonzo went 2-for-4, including a two-run home run in the first inning.
NSU, which didn't lose a conference series en route to an SLC regular season title and a 22-3 league record in 2015, returns to Lady Demon Diamond to host Louisiana Tech on Wednesday and Houston Baptist in a three-game series against Houston Baptist starting Friday.
