SAN MARCOS, TEXAS -- After getting a pressure-packed save against Texas State, pitcher
Shelby Sells provided a quality outing in her first start of the season Sunday.
But DePaul scratched across a sixth-inning run to top Northwestern State 1-0 on the final day of Texas State's CenturyLink Classic.
Â
DePaul catcher Naomi Tellez singled in Cherelle Chambers with one out for the game's only run. Chambers pinch ran for Dylan Christensen, who doubled with one out to start DePaul's (2-3) offensive momentum.
Â
Sells (0-1) surrendered just five hits and two walks in the loss, NSU's (4-1) first of the season. The 4-0 start was the program's best since 1991 (6-0).
Â
Sells, who will likely play a larger role depending on the severity of sophomore pitcher MIkayla Brown's leg injury (suffered Saturday), stranded four runners in scoring position before DePaul broke through in the sixth inning.
Â
"Sells does a great job, and she's been there before," Â "She's got good stuff, and when she's on, she's as good as anybody we've got.
Â
"She's got to understand we need consistency from her, and she's ready for that. Hopefully she'll continue to have outings like she did today. We like our chances when we give up just one run."
Â
NSU put runners on base in four innings, including runners in scoring position in three innings.
Â
The Lady Demons had been able to produce clutch hits throughout their 4-0 start to the tournament, but NSU couldn't drive in runs Sunday.
Â
NSU loaded the bases in the third inning, but DePaul pitcher Morgan Maize (2-2) stopped the bleeding with a
Sarah Huey fly ball to end the threat.
Â
Senior
Natalie Landry was caught stealing in the fourth inning to derail an opportunity, and NSU couldn't take advantage of two runners on base in the fifth inning either.
Â
Landry and junior
Brittney Jones each went 2-for-3 as the Lady Demons compiled seven hits. NSU had beaten DePaul 5-1 to start the season, including four home runs in the same inning off Maize.
Â
NSU makes its home debut with a doubleheader against Alcorn State on Wednesday.
