NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State pressured Nicholls for the majority of regulation Friday, but it was the Lady Demons who had to thwart Colonels' opportunities in the overtimes of a 0-0 draw.
NSU (9-6-1, 6-2-1 Southland Conference) outshot Nicholls (6-6-2, 3-4-2 SLC) 12-10 in regulation with more quality chances.
But the Colonels took 12 overtime shots to NSU's zero. Junior
Alex Latham made five of her eight saves in the overtimes, including halting several breakaway chances for Nicholls' attackers.
Latham has six shutouts this season, the first in a tie.
"Credit to Nicholls. They had a good game plan and did a good job with it," said NSU coach
George Van Linder. "We knew what they would try to do and prepared, but we couldn't finish a couple of opportunities tonight.
"When there's a tie, one team feels like it's a win and the other feels like it's a loss. We feel like it's a loss for us."
Perhaps NSU's best opportunity came on a
Shelby Drope shot from distance that Nicholls keeper Taylor Mosley deflected just over the cross bar late in the first half.
Sophomore
April Trowbridge put all three of her shots on goal as NSU had five shots on target. Nicholls' Jess Coates landed four of her eight shots on frame as the Colonels placed eight of their 22 attempts on goal.
Freshman
Jordy Warren also attempted three shots.
Nicholls keeper Taylor Mosley made five saves in her shutout effort.
NSU honored its three seniors –
Patry Carrion,
Camila Ardila and
Peyton Rector – before the match. At halftime, the Lady Demons recognized about 20 former players as the program celebrated its 20
th anniversary of its creation.
With the tie, NSU remains in third place in the Southland Conference standings behind Central Arkansas (8-0-1) and Stephen F. Austin (7-2 SLC).
UCA topped Southeastern 3-2 as the Lions (6-9-2, 3-5-1 SLC) head south to Natchitoches for a Sunday match at 1 p.m.
