Soccer's five-match winning streak ends Friday in loss at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Entering Friday's match, Northwestern State had been on the winning end of one-goal results.

But the Lady Demons had their five-match winning streak snapped Friday when they were on the losing end of a one-goal decision as they fell 1-0 at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

Islanders' senior Yvette Franco provided the match's lone goal with a 25-yard shot that slipped through junior goalkeeper Alex Latham's hands.

NSU's five-match winning streak, which all came in Southland Conference play, was tied for the program's second longest, matching the 2005 squad. The longest winning streak stands at nine consecutive matches back in 2000.

"We are extremely disappointed," said NSU coach George Van Linder. "You have to credit (TAMU-CC) because they showed a lot of hunger.

"I am confident that we will learn from this, and we will be better. Our players hate losing more than anything."

The Lady Demons (8-6, 5-2 SLC) appeared to score midway through the first half when sophomore April Trowbridge collected a loose ball in the 18-yard box and fired a shot into goal, but an Islanders' foul wiped out the opportunity. NSU couldn't connect on the ensuing free kick from just outside the box.

NSU held a 10-7 edge in shots over the Islanders (2-12, 2-5), who are on a winning streak of their own after winning at Southeastern this past week.

But only three of NSU's shots were on target, and TAMU-CC goalkeeper Jordan Wainwright made all three saves in the win. The three shots on goal were a season-worst in conference play, and the 10 total shots tied a conference-worst for NSU.

Defensively, the seven shots allowed (two on goal) were both season bests in conference play.

The Lady Demons slipped into a tie for third place in the Southland Conference standings, still knotted with Stephen F. Austin (8-4, 5-2) after the Ladyjacks lost at Nicholls, 1-0.

Abilene Christian jumped two spots into second place with a 2-1 win against Lamar.

NSU gets back into action with a trip to Houston Baptist on Sunday at 1 p.m.
