Box Score NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State soccer team nearly tripled Lamar's shot attempts Friday, but the Cardinals were the team finding the back of the net.
The Lady Demons fell to Lamar 3-1 at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex despite outshooting the Cardinals 29-11.
NSU (3-5-2, 0-1-1 Southland Conference) put 10 shots on goal compared to Lamar's six, and NSU coach
George Van Linder said his team must finish its chances.
"We were happy with how we played and how we came out in the first and second half," Van Linder said. "We just had a few moments where Lamar took advantage of moments where we weren't as sharp as we needed to be.
"We talked about how forwards have to take responsibility for scoring goals. Just like goalkeepers -- no matter what happens -- are responsible for keeping the ball out of the back of the net."
Lamar (6-5, 2-0) struck for two first-half goals on just five total shots. Lamar's M.J. Eckart collected the ball at the top of the box and punched a goal to the top center for a 1-0 lead in the 27
th minute. Mari Olastuen, credited with the assist, sent a cross into the box.
The Cardinals snatched a 2-0 lead just four minutes before halftime when Juliana Ocampo dribbled down the left side and chipped a shot over NSU goalkeeper
Brooke Bourbonais.
NSU missed multiple chances in the first half, including a
Cassandra Briscoe shot from inside the box, which sailed high.
The Lady Demons continued to dominate possession in the second half, eventually resulting in a
Jacqueline Manza goal in the 55
th minute. The freshman has three goals this season after having two balls deflected, only to fire the third ball to the opposite top corner.
NSU had two shots bang off the post in the loss. Lamar sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Lovejoy made nine saves in the win, including jumping and barely deflecting two shots near the crossbar.
Briscoe and freshman
Brittany Caserma each took a team-high five shots. Sophomore forward
Esdeina Gonzalez and junior midfielder
Camila Ardila each attempted four shots.
Lamar helped sealed the win when Jordan Mulnix scored her seventh goal of the season in the 74
th minute. Mulnix fought for a loose ball in the box and finished to the lower right-hand corner.
NSU returns to action when McNeese State visits for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
