Fullerton, Calif. – The Northwestern State bats came alive in day two of the SoCal Collegiate Classic as the Lady Demons racked up 19 hits and nine runs but it was not enough as the squad fell 8-5 to No. 22/21 Notre Dame and 6-4 to Cal State Fullerton at Anderson Family Field on Saturday.
Despite the losses, there were several highlights for NSU (0-4) including
Micayla Sorosiak who went a combined 5-for-8 driving in five runs over the two games. The Lady Demons also found the long ball on two separate occasions, the first by
Natalie Landry against the Irish (3-1) then by Sorosiak against the Titans (4-0).
The Lady Demons biggest inning of the day came in the form of a three-run sixth against Notre Dame, at the time bringing the game to within three runs. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double from Sorosiak to bring home
Sarah Huey and
Sidney Salmans.
NSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Cal State Fullerton behind back-to-back doubles from Sorosiak and
Kellye Kincannon. However, two innings later six consecutive Cal State players reached base highlighted by five hits as the Titans came away with a five-run half inning.
After Cal State added another run, the Lady Demons began chipping away, getting one back in the sixth on a Kincannon groundout RBI to bring home Salmans. Salmans added another run later as part of Landry's two-run right field home run – the 11
th of her career – to make things interesting in the seventh inning.
Micaela Bouvier tossed a perfect two innings of relief for starter
Baylee Gray who gave up five earned runs and eight hits in four innings pitched.
Against Notre Dame, Northwestern State notched 10 hits, including three from Sorosiak, in the loss.
After putting up a combined two runs in two games the day prior, Northwestern State pushed across five combined runs over three consecutive innings from the fourth through the sixth.
Shelby Sells threw four innings for the Lady Demons giving up eight runs on nine hits while striking out one and walking two. Notre Dame's (3-0) biggest hit came in the first inning via a Katey Haus grand slam. Haus was responsible for five RBIs on the day.
Skylar Cagle came on in relief in the fifth and threw two innings, allowing two hits and walking two while successfully keeping the Irish off the board.
