Lone goal leads UALR over Northwestern State on Friday

9/5/2014 9:48:00 PM

Box Score NATCHITOCHES – Fali Garuba pushed in a header on an open goal in the 38th minute to give Arkansas-Little Rock the only score and lead the Trojans to a 1-0 victory over the Northwestern State soccer team Friday night in non-conference action.

Mikayla Uyokpeyi lobbed a ball into the box and drew out NSU (1-4) goalkeeper Brooke Bourbonais to give Garuba an open net for her fourth goal of the season. The goal kept UALR undefeated with a 5-0 record, the best start in school history, and took its 150th win as a program.

"We just had a little bit of a breakdown.  Our defense was playing well all game," said head coach George Van Linder. "They floated a ball in, and our backline and goalkeeper all went for it. They were able to get a head on it and push it in."

Despite no score, the Lady Demon attack was tremendously aggressive, but was called offside eight times in the match which allowed only eight shots to be taken.  One of NSU's eight shots was on goal.

"It has just been a timing thing. We talked in the preseason how we'd be a little rough around the edges in attacking to start the season," said Van Linder. "We are getting sharper and sharper, and that is an area we are excited about. We really think it is going get better as time goes on."

The Trojans finished with 11 shots and five were on goal. Northwestern State earned six corner kicks over UALR's four.

Shelby Drope and Cache Haley led NSU with two shots and Yanci Johnson had the lone shot on-goal.

Quin Wilkes and Garuba each had three shots and Ariel Galletti and Uyokpeyi had two apiece.

Bourbonais and Alex Latham each played 45 minutes in goal and had two saves each for NSU.  Bre Ilkuf had one save during the entire match.

The Lady Demons will return the pitch on Sunday when they play at Baylor, just one day after the Demon football team faces the Bears. NSU returns home on Sept. 14 to host Jackson State in the Demon Soccer Complex. ?
