Box Score BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar scored three goals in the span of four minutes that helped the Lady Cardinals put away the Northwestern State soccer team, 4-1, in the Southland Conference opener Friday night at the Lamar Soccer Complex
NSU (3-6, 0-1 SLC) also scored a goal in the four minute span when reigning league offensive player of the week
Esdeina Gonzalez scored her seventh goal, unassisted, at the 81 minute mark. It was her seventh goal of the season and she continues lead the Lady Demons with 15 points.
Lamar (3-5, 1-0) scored the opening goal in the 35
th minute when Mari Olastuen scored her first goal of the year unassisted on a fastbreak down the left side. The score remained 1-0 at the halftime break.
Jannet Hernandez pushed the score to 2-0 after she scored on a rebound of Olasuten's shot in the 77
th minute. Just over two minutes later Brooke Kirchofer scored her first of the season on an assist from Kimmy Albeno, who added a scored exactly 50 seconds after Gonzalez scored NSU's goal.
The two teams had 21 shots apiece, but the Lady Cardinals held the advantage in shots on-goal, 11-4.
Alex Latham played the entire match in goal for Northwestern State and collected seven saves. Bailey Fontenot gathered three saves in the match.
Gonzalez led the NSU with four shots on the night and was followed by
Yanci Johnson and
Shelby Drope who each had three.
Brooke Eastburg and
Sage Leffew had two shots, and
Peyton Rector,
Maja Lambertsson, Cache Haley,
Cassandra Briscoe,
Chandler Monk,
Shannon Danku and
Payton Roney all had one shot apiece.
The 21-shot outburst gives NSU three-straight games with a least 20 shots and was the fourth this season. The highest shot count was in the season opener against Louisiana College (28).
NSU returns to the Lady Demons Soccer Complex on Sunday when they take on Stephen F. Austin at 1 o'clock. It will be the league opener for the Ladyjacks.
