Box Score NATCHITOCHES – After threatening two NCAA FCS passing accuracy records Saturday night to spearhead a 51-27 whipping of in-state rival Southern on the road in Baton Rouge, Northwestern State senior quarterback
Zach Adkins was among five players named College Sporting News All-Stars among the nation's FCS ranks Monday for remarkable performances in last week's football games.
Adkins was also voted the Louisiana Sports Writers Association state offensive player of the week, with the selection made by 15 media members around Louisiana.
Adkins completed 30 of 35 passes, including a school-record 19 in a row, and had four touchdown throws as the Demons raced to a 48-7 lead less than four minutes into the second half.
He went 17 for 17 in the second quarter as NSU expanded a 17-7 lead to 34-7 at halftime. The 17 completions were just three shy of the NCAA mark for most in a quarter (20 by Joe Walland of Yale in 1999 against Harvard, when he tried 33 in the third quarter). His last two completions in the streak helped the Demons stretch their advantage to an insurmountable 41-point margin early in the third quarter.
His 30 of 35 aim (85.7 percent) was close to the NCAA FCS record for completion percentage (91.4 percent, 32-35 by Quinn Epperly of Princeton against Cornell last season).
Adkins moved up to second nationally with his 72.3 completion percentage this season, which also included a sparkling 31 of 42 in the season opener against Missouri State. The senior from Riverside, Cal., broke the single-game school mark for completions in that contest.
He is eighth nationally in completions per game (22.7) and ninth in passing touchdowns (9) in this week's NCAA statistics.
Other players cited as College Sporting News All-Stars on Monday were Mike Perish, the quarterback who threw for 317 yards and three TDs, leading Indiana State to a win at Ball State; Tarik Cohen, a running back from North Carolina A&T who ran for 234 yards in a win over Elon; Pat Meehan, an Illinois State linebacker who had 11 tackles, including four for lost yards, and an interception in a win over Eastern Illinois; and Sacramento State kicker Brad Cornish, who made five field goals, four that were 40 yards or longer, in a victory over Weber State.
