Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Jonathan Armijo lined a double to left field that knocked in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and led Incarnate Word to a 3-2 win over the Northwestern State baseball team Friday night in Southland Conference play at Sullivan Field.
Incarnate Word's (15-27, 6-10 SLC) Ethan McGill reached on a two-out error by Demon (25-21, 13-9) third baseman
Chase Daughdrill and advanced to second on a wild pitch during Armijo's at-bat. Aaron Warren pinch ran for McGill, and scored when Armijo put a double over
Cort Brinson's head in left field.
Nick Heath scored the game's first run in the second inning after he took a one-out hit by pitch and advanced to third base on back-to-back stolen bases. He scored when UIW catcher Blue Hybner tried to cut him down at third base and threw it into left field.
NSU made it 2-0 in the third inning on
Chase Daughdrill's single through the left side that scored
Bret Underwood. Underwood led off the frame with a single through the right side. He advanced to third base on two groundouts.
Incarnate Word answered in the third inning on a single to left field from Jason Stone that scored Dustin Cole, from third base. It tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning on Stone's second RBI-single that scored Hybner from third base.
Northwestern State had a chance to push runs across in the first and seventh innings.
Edwin Gomez led off the game with a single up the middle, and took second base on balk before
Bret Underwood drew a seven-pitch walk.
Caleb Dugas bunted them over, but NSU hit two fly balls to end the inning.
"We had second and third in the first inning with the middle of our order up, and we couldn't score," said Demon head coach
Lane Burroughs. "We don't make about three plays at third base, and that's your ball game."
In the seventh inning,
Nick Heath hit a roller to the first base side that resulted in an error, stole second base. He tried to take third base on a slow roller to the pitcher from
Garrett Logan, but was able to retreat to second base, and allowed Logan to reach first base to make it two on with one out. Heath was picked off at second base in the next at-bat.
Northwestern State had a runner on in every inning but the fourth and ninth frames. NSU left six men on base, five were in scoring position.
Adam Oller (5-1) took his first loss of the year after he worked eight innings and allowed only two earned runs. He gave up nine hits, and struck out four batters.
"Oller gave us a chance to win, again," said Burroughs. "He does that every time he goes out. He didn't have his best stuff, but he gave us every opportunity."
He worked out of a big jam in the sixth inning when he struck out Hybner and forced Cole into a groundout. Jesse Hoover reached on a walk to lead off the inning, and took second base on a single that got by Daughdrill at third base. Armijo bunted them over to second and third base.
"He pitched out of some jams," said Burroughs. "I'm very proud of him and the way he competed."
UIW starter Geno Encina (6-6) earned the complete-game win. He gave up five hits, walked three and struck out two.
Daughdrill had two hits in game in four at-bats. Gomez, Underwood and Dugas each had one hit, and Underwood drew to walks.
Stone and McGill each had two hits in four at-bats, and Stone had to RBIs in the game.
The second game of the series is slated for 3 o'clock on Saturday, and the finale will be on Sunday at 1 o'clock. ?
