Islanders take game one, NSU leads 5-1 at game suspension

Box Score NATCHITOCHES – A five-run surge in the fifth inning gave Texas A&M – Corpus Christi a 10-9 win over the Northwestern State softball team Saturday afternoon at the Lady Diamond, followed by NSU grabbing a 5-1 advantage in game two before the contest was suspended in the fifth inning.

It will be picked up on Sunday at 11:00.

The third and final game of the series will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Sunday morning game. Tickets from Saturday's doubleheader will be valid for entry to the remainder of the second game at 11:00, but will not grant entry to the afternoon game.

The Lady Demons dropped to 10-11 overall, 2-2 in the Southland Conference with the opening-game loss as the Islanders improved to 7-17, 2-2.

Brianna Rodriguez picked up her third homer of the season in the first inning of game two, a shot to right field. NSU notched three more runs in the second off a pair of walks and a hit from Brittney Jones.

In the third, Cheyenne DelaGarza singled to left center with Brittany Virgoe on third, allowing Virgoe to score and take a 5-0 lead.

The Islanders picked up a single run off two Lady Demon errors in the fifth to get on the board.

Trailing 9-3 in game one, the Islanders put up a five-run inning in the fifth to come within one of the Lady Demons. AMCC picked up the first two runs off RBI singles, and the other three on a three-run homer to left field from Lindsey Lyles.

The Islanders tacked on two more and took the lead in the sixth off a two-run RBI double from Valerie Perez. NSU was unable to combat the one-run deficit in the seventh, dropping game one 10-9.

The Lady Demons started off hot, putting three runs on the board in the first as leadoff Tara McKenney singled up the middle, stole second, and advanced to third on the bunt from Cali Burke. Rodriguez then singled to left to score McKenney.

Virgoe and Kellye Kincannon both reached on singles up the middle and to second, respectively, to bring up Brittney Jones. The Bryan, Texas, native singled to right center and advanced to second on the throw, allowing two runs to score.

The lone run in the second was secured by Kayla Boening as she rocked her second homer of the season to left field.

A pair of doubles from DelaGarza and McKenney in the third gave NSU three more runs and a 7-3 lead. The Lady Demons tacked on two more in the fourth off a two-run homer to left field from Jones.

Jones led from the plate with a 3-for-4 performance and four RBI, followed by McKenney with the same outing and two RBI.

Sophomore Baylee Gray (1-1) suffered her first loss of the season, giving up the final run of the game, and allowing three hits. Shelby Sells started in the circle and threw four complete innings, giving up six runs and 10 hits.
