Oral Roberts downs Northwestern State, plays two Saturday

Box Score TULSA, Okla. – Tyler Boss' three-run double followed by a grand slam from Audie Afenir in the first inning opened the door to a 15-0 seven-inning loss for the Northwestern State baseball team at Oral Roberts Friday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
 
NSU and ORU will finish the series on Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at noon.  Adam Oller (2-0, 3.07 earned run average) will get the start for NSU in the first game, and the final game's starter is to be determined.
 
Hunter Duvic (0-3) started on the mound for the Demons (7-9) and worked one-third on an inning. He allowed six runs on three hits and two walks. He retired the first batter he faced before the big inning Oral Roberts (8-8).
 
Brandon Smith finished the first inning and pitched the next three frames.  He allowed six runs on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts, and gave up only one run in the second and held the Golden Eagles scoreless in the third and fourth frames.
 
Jose Trevio, Matt Brandy, and Austen Colt each had a RBI in the fourth inning.  ORU added three more runs in the sixth inning on two RBIs from Matt Brandy and a wild pitch.  Fielding Matkins pitched in his first game of the season and loaded the bases before being replaced by Evan Tidwell.
 
Joel Atkinson was 2-of-4 in the game, and Chase Daughdrill, Caleb Dugas, and Edwin Gomez all added hits.  Daughdrill upped his on-base streak to 16-straight contests.  Cort Brinson and Regan Kaufman also reached base on walks.
                                                                 
Afenir was 1-of-3 at the plate with four RBIs and two runs scored.  Boss (1-for-4) and Matt Brandy (1-of-3) both had three RBIs apiece. Colt was 3-of-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored.  Trevino and Brandon Healy also had three hits in the game.
 
ORU starter Kurt Giller went the distance with seven innings pitched with six hits allowed, two walks and eight strikeouts.
 
The Demons will return home to host Stephen F. Austin in a three-game conference series that will begin on March 21 at 6:30.
