Box Score EDINBURG, Texas –    Northwestern State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth,  and Texas-Pan American answered before the gritty Demon baseball team hung a three-run sixth inning Saturday for a 6-4 win over the Broncs in Al Ogletree Classic  at UTPA at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

"This was a team win," said assistant coach Chris Curry.  "We challenged the guys to come out and take the weekend after an emotional loss last night, and they answered."

NSU played three games on the weekend, and won two.   It defeated Prairie View A&M 5-2 on Friday and lost to UTPA 1-0 in the late game that evening.

On Saturday, NSU (3-4) scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead, but UTPA (4-3) scored two in the bottom frame of the fourth and added another to tie it in the fifth inning.  Joel Atkinson led off the sixth inning with a hit-by-pitch followed by a walk to Caleb Dugas.

After the Broncs replaced starter Matt Harrell with Tanner Dickerson, Webster attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but UTPA shortstop Jesus Garcia mishandled the ball and and allowed Webster to reach and advance to second base while Atkinson was able to score.

Webster and Dugas scored on a second error by Garcia off of the bat of Regan Kaufman.

"The story of the game was our answer to them tying it.  We scored three in the fourth, they answered with two.  They blanked us in the fifth and tied it up," said Curry.  "Our guys fought and showed tenacity to get the lead back and win.

"We have a hardcore, hardnosed, never-say-die team, and it showed today," said Curry.

Dugas scored the first run of the game after he reached on a double to left field and advanced home on a single to center field from Webster.  Kaufman singled and advanced to second base on a throw to get Webster out at third base, both men were safe.

Chase Daughdrill lined a single through the left side to score Webster, and Kaufman scored when Edwin Gomez reached on a fielder's choice.

John Gault (2-0) got the start for NSU and allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings pitched.  He grabbed the win.   Josh Morris took over in the sixth inning and pitched two-thirds of an inning with one hit allowed.  Andrew Adams replaced Morris in the sixth and worked 1.1 innings.  Parrack took over in the eight and finished with a perfect inning.

"Adams and Parrack were lights-out tonight," said Curry.  "We called on them and the lefty-righty combination worked very well."

Dugas came on to close out the ninth inning, but got into trouble and allowed a run on three hits and a walk.   Freshman Adam Oller came in and struck out the only two batters he faced.

"Oller showed so much courage, tenacity, fight, and everything else you could say for a freshman who took over in a situation with the game on the line," said Curry.  "He walked into the game and got the first guy looking and the second guy swinging."

Dugas was two-of-three at the plate with two runs scored and a walk.  Kaufman 2-of-3 with a walk and run scored.  Webster (1-3) had a run batted in and scored two, Daughdrill (1-4) knocked in a run, and Gomez (1-4) also had an RBI.

"We've been through a tough stretch to open the season," said Curry.  "Once guys figure out their roles and get healthy, it should be a very fun season."

NSU added another hit-by-pitched the plate today.  That gives NSU 23 HBPs through the first six games and at least one in every game this season.

"That is something Coach Burroughs brought to the table," said Curry.  "Our guys have been very coachable and have bought in to that."

The Demons will travel to Southern at 6:00on Wednesday before hosting the Jaguars in three-game series that begins on Friday in Brown-Stroud Field.
