FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Northwestern State brings the nation's leading assist man and No. 2 scorer into Sunday afternoon's visit to Arkansas as
Jalan West and
Zeek Woodley lead the Demons against a Razorbacks squad that likes to run every bit as much as the visitors do.
The 2:30 contest matches two of the country's top 25 scoring offenses. Arkansas (9-2) is posting 83.5 points per game while the Demons (4-5) are averaging 78 points, coming off an 89-85 victory in their last outing Dec. 20 against UL Lafayette.
West, NSU's 5-10 junior point guard, tops the NCAA with his 8.6 assists average and is the only player in the country in the top 10 in both assists and steals (3.0, fifth). He is scoring 15.3 points per contest.
Woodley's 23.3 scoring average is just 0.1 off the NCAA lead as he has posted seven consecutive 20-point performances, six ranging between 25-28 points. The 6-2 sophomore swingman is 22
nd nationally in shooting aim (59.8 percent), best in the country by a player under 6-6.
Woodley's career 61.1 percent aim is fifth among all active college players and he is the only one under 6-5 in the top 30 nationally.
Completing NSU's "Big Three" is senior center
Marvin Frazier, who is averaging career bests in scoring (10.6) and rebounding (7.7) while blocking 2.2 shots per game. Frazier, West and Woodley combine for 63 percent of the Demons' scoring while shooting a combined 50 percent overall, 36 percent on 3-pointers and 76 percent at the free throw line.
The contest, televised nationally by the SEC Network, will be broadcast on the Demon Sports Network, flagshipped by 100.7 KZBL FM in Natchitoches and including SportsTalk 100.7 and SuperTalk 1340 AM in Shreveport and 103.1 KWLA FM in Anacoco. Free live audio is available at NSUDemons.com.
The Demons will play for only the second time in 18 days as they open a hectic stretch with four games in eight days. NSU hosts Louisiana College at 3 Wednesday afternoon in Prather Coliseum, then opens Southland Conference play next Saturday night at Houston Baptist and visits Sam Houston State two nights later.
The Razorbacks also have conference play near, opening Jan. 6 at Georgia after one more non-conference outing next Saturday at home. UA brings a three-game win streak into Sunday's game, dispatching Dayton (69-55), Southeast Missouri (84-67) and Milwaukee (84-54 last Monday) following consecutive road losses at nationally-ranked Iowa State (95-77) and Clemson (68-65).
Like the Demons, the Hogs have three double-digit scorers, led by 6-11 forward Bobby Portis (16.7 points, 7.3 rebounds per game). Michael Qualls (14.6 ppg) and Anthlon Bell (10.6 ppg) are focal points of the Arkansas attack.
Qualls, a 6-6 Shreveport-Huntington product, and West, from Bossier High School, squared off during their prep careers and were AAU summer ball teammates for Louisiana Roundball.
