Aggies overwhelm Demons quickly in season-opening rout

Box Score COLLEGE STATION, Texas – In the aftermath of Texas A&M's surprising 109-68 rout of Northwestern State Friday night in the season opener for both teams, the only palatable thing for the Demons was to look ahead.

The Demons play their home opener Monday night at 6:30 against Lyon College, shooting for their 400th all-time win in Prather Coliseum since it opened 50 years ago.

Friday night at Reed Arena, Texas A&M never trailed, went up by 10 six minutes into play and scored 18 unanswered points midway through the opening half to blow open the game and led 55-22 at halftime.

The Aggies had seven players in double digits, topped by Jalen Jones and Antwan Space with 16 each, while Jordan Green and Tavario Miller scored 15 apiece.

NSU got 13 points from Zeek Woodley, 11 by Marvin Frazier and 10 points and six assists from Jalan West.

"It was one of those nights you hate to go through, but it's just one night. By no means are we going to panic and overreact about this, but we will most definitely learn from it," said Demons' coach Mike McConathy. "Texas A&M played extremely well, and we were on the other end of the scale, obviously."

The Demons were unable to attack the interior, with 33 of their 58 shots coming from behind the 3-point arc, with only six makes. NSU shot 36 percent overall while A&M was at 57 percent in both halves, including 8 of 17 aim on 3-pointers.

"We did not get up in the passing lanes and disrupt them, and they took advantage again and again, did a great job with what they were doing," said McConathy. "When you get whipped, you should give a lot of credit to your opponent and the Aggies did almost everything well tonight.

"Our guys said it in the lockerroom. We got hit in the mouth early and we did not react. We didn't bring the toughness that this game required, collectively. We didn't handle the physical nature of it and we weren't able to get anything established inside. I thought we could rebound effectively but that didn't happen tonight," he said.

The Aggies outboarded the Demons 52-32.

Frazier went 3-of-4 on 3-pointers and also blocked two shots to move into a tie for fourth all-time in rejections in school history, equaling the 111 by Jethro Owens from 1989-93.

The game was the first of four road outings in the first five games this month for NSU.
