NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Northwestern State volleyball held Stephen F. Austin to its lowest hitting percentage of the Southland Conference slate at .171 but key plays at pivotal moments allowed the Ladyjacks to sweep NSU (25-19, 25-23, 25-16) from Shelton Gym on Tuesday night.
The Lady Demons (9-13, 6-3 SLC) posted their lowest attack percentage (.103) since hitting just .097 against Nicholls on Sept. 27. In the process, SFA (16-7, 9-0 SLC) continued its undefeated streak in league play with the squad's eighth conference sweep in nine matches.
"This game always comes down to serving and passing and SFA outplayed us in that area," fifth-year co-head coach
Hugh Hernesman said. "We never really found a consistent rhythm offensively. Defensively, I thought we executed pretty well to be honest. We held them almost 150 points below their conference average in attack percentage. We just couldn't find enough ways to score."
Northwestern State was led by redshirt junior
Caiti O'Connell's nine kills followed by junior
Glynna Johnson's seven and freshman
Aubrey Davis's five. Davis led the way with five total blocks, her most since tallying seven against Southern Mississippi on Sept. 5.
Elsewhere,
Glynna Johnson added four total blocks and senior
Vanessa Coleman finished with three. Senior
Emily Johnson concluded the match with 17 assists while senior
Stacey DiFrancesco contributed the Lady Demons' lone service ace. Sophomore
Bailey Martin and DiFrancesco each posted double-digit digs with 12 and 11 respectively.
"In these situations, you just have to tip your cap to the other team and move on," Hernesman said. "I'm more concerned about Lamar and how we're playing at the end of the season, so that will be our focus."
Northwestern State returns to the friendly confines of Prather Coliseum on Thursday at 7 o'clock against Lamar. NSU is a perfect 4-0 at home on the season at 21-3 dating back to 2012. The match will mark the first of three straight at Prather for the Lady Demons and will be faculty and staff appreciation night.
