NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State soccer team looks to keep its Southland Conference Tournament hopes alive on Sunday at 1 o'clock when it returns home to host Southeastern Louisiana in the "Kick Pink" game to end
#ForkCancer week for NSU athletics.
Representatives from the Susan G. Komen Foundation will be available at Sunday's match, and NSU will be raffling off a team-autographed ball along with holding a silent action. NSU athletics will be giving away free #ForkCancer t-shirts at the game, and admission is free as well.
NSU (4-11-1, 1-6-1 Southland Conference) kept its all-time undefeated streak against Nicholls alive on Friday when
Camila Ardila and Caché Haley each knocked in a goal in the 2-1 win. The match ended a five-game road stint for Northwestern State, and was also the last road game of the regular season.
With a win, Northwestern State would remain in contention for a spot in the six-team league tournament, but with a loss and win from either Lamar or Nicholls the Lady Demons would be eliminated.
Southeastern La. (11-4, 4-3) lost 3-0 to league leader Stephen F. Austin on three goals in the second half. The Lady Lions boast the league's top scorer in Bri Singh, who has 27 points on the year with 12 goals scored and three assists.
Maggie Ramsey has 20 points for the SLU, Katie Noonan has 14 and Gisenia Uteras and Kayla Vera have 11 each.
Southeastern La. started out 3-0 in league play with wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, McNeese State and Incarnate Word. Since, the Lady Lions have lost three of their last four with the lone win being at home against Central Arkansas.
Esdeina Gonzalez leads Northwestern State in points (15) and goals (7). Haley's goal on Friday put her in a tie with
Julia Ranalli for second place with seven points.
Cassandra Briscoe,
Yanci Johnson and
Nikki Saunders all have six points.
NSU goalkeeper
Alex Latham caught a season-high tying 10 saves on Friday, and has 68 all season in 189 shots faced. She has a 2.57 goals against average and a .667 saves percentage.
Hope Sabadash was SLU's starting goalkeeper, but hasn't seen action since Sept. 21. Casey Jeanfreau has taken over between the pipes and has a 2-3 record since.
After Sunday, the Lady Demons won't return to the pitch for another 12 days, on Halloween night against Incarnate Word. They wrap up the regular season two days later against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
