Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - Senior midfielder
Taylor Mulnix's goal in the 73rd minute gave the Northwestern State 1-0 lead, and that is all that Northwestern State soccer team need to grab its first win of the year at Jackson State Friday afternoon in non-conference action.
Mulnix scored her first goal of the season when a Jackson State defender tried to clear the ball, but instead played it to Mulnix in the corner of the penalty box. She put the shot inside of the near post.
"It is nice to get a win and see the smiles on the players' faces," said head coach
George Van Linder. "They worked hard this week and I am glad to see that the hard work was rewarded."
Offense came at a premium in the game with both teams having less than 10 shots in the match. JSU (1-4-1) had six shots with three on-goal, and the Lady Demons (1-4) finished the night with five shots, three on-goal.
"We still have lots of work to do, but I think this result encouraged them. It was nice to see them 'gut' through it and get the victory," said Van Linder.
Jessica Danku (1-3) played the entire match as the goalkeeper, and made three saves. No Lady Demon took more than one shot;
Cassandra Briscoe,
Chandler Mason,
Johanna Sigvardsson, and
Nikki Saunders all had an attempt.
Rayana Speight and Jalana Ellis each had two shots for the Tigers.
Northwestern State will travel to Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday at 1 o'clock, and will return home on Sept. 15 to face Prairie View A&M in the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.
