Northwestern State grabs an overtime win at Houston Baptist

Box Score HOUSTON – Down 1-0 at the half, the Northwestern State women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals, including one from senior Ashlee Savona with five minutes left in overtime, to give the Lady Demons a 2-1 win Friday night in Southland Conference action.
 
It was the second straight match that NSU (3-6-1, 1-1-1 Southland Conference) has played extra minutes with a double-overtime contest that resulted in a scoreless tie against Lamar on Tuesday. 
 
"I am so proud of how hard everyone on the team fought," said head coach George Van Linder.  "We felt we were due a win and it was great to get one at HBU, a team that is much better than their record."
 
HBU's (1-7-1, 0-2-0 SLC) Allison Abendschein scored first in the first half on an assist by Rebekah Tovar.   She flipped it over NSU goalkeeper Jessica Danku, who tried to challenge the loose ball.
 
Through regulation,  Danku had eight saves after the Huskies' nine shots on-goal. Northwestern State had five shots on-goal, and each team had 15 total shots on the night.
 
Cassandra Briscoe tied the match at the at the 60 minute mark with assists by Danku and Nikki Saunders. Danku took a free kick from near midfield and sent it to Saunders who crossed it to Briscoe for the score, the first goal for her on the season.
 
Savona finished the game with a bouncing ball in the box with 5:34 left on the clock in overtime and put it past the goalkeeper for a "golden goal" win.  It was the first official goal that Savona has scored on the year after she had a goal taken away after the rainout in the original Lamar match.
 
Northwestern State opens a five-match homestand on Sunday at one o'clock when they host Central Arkansas.  Sam Houston, Abilene Christian, McNeese, and Nicholls will all be apart of that stand.
