Box Score OXFORD, Miss. – Rafaelle Souza and Mandy McCalla scored two goals each to give Ole Miss a 5-0 win over the Northwestern State women's soccer team Friday night in the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
Souza (2, 3) struck first for the Rebels (3-0-0) in the opening half with an unassisted score in the third minute, and her second goal came on a rebound from the far corner that was tipped out by goal keeper
Jessica Danku in the 15
th minute. Olivia Harrison was given the assist.
Danku allowed all five goals and had eight saves. Northwestern State dropped to 0-3-0 on the young season.
“Brutally disappointed is how the entire team feels,” said head coach
George Van Linder. “We have continued to make adjustments and improvements, but some of our fundamental mistakes cost us.”
McCalla (3, 4) scored the final goal of the first half in the 30
th minute when she took the ball in on a deflection from a Lady Demon defender. Her second goal, and the last of the match, was scored in the 55
th minute from the middle of the box on an assist from Jennifer Miller.
Bethany Bunker (2) scored the fourth goal of the game in the 46
th minute when she drove the length of the field just after halftime to take the unassisted score.
“The team and staff are still positive and we all know that we sound like a broken record when we say 'watch out for us' but we still feel that way at this point and we are not giving up or giving in,” said Van Linder.
Ole Miss continued their trend of outshooting their opponent by double-digits when it took 24 attempts, but only allowed the Lady Demons to take four. Thirteen of the Rebels' shots were on-goal.
Camila Ardila,
Johanna Sigvardsson,
Ashlee Savona, and
Julia Ranalli each took shots for Northwestern State, and Ardila's was on-goal.
NSU was issued four yellow cards; Jackie Sturg,
Brooke Eastburg, and Ranalli all took cards, and Ranalli was given two.
Sigvardsson and Strug played every minute of the match, and Ardila played 86 minutes.
The Lady Demons will play game three of their five-game road stint when the kickoff at Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday at 1 o'clock.
