NATCHITOCHES -- Northwestern State's NCAA Tournament appearance and 23-9 record helped three Demons earn recognition on the 2013 All-Louisiana Collegiate Men's Basketball Team chosen by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, topped by state Newcomer of the Year

Hicks, a junior forward, was also a second-team All-Louisiana choice on a 15-man squad. Demons senior guard
Shamir Davis and freshman guard
Jalan West were among six honorable mention selections in voting by 38 state media members. The team was announced late Saturday night.
All-time Demon great Roman Banks, recently named to the Fab 50 on the Demons' All-Century Basketball Team chosen as part of the NSU Basketball Centennial Celebration this year, was voted state Coach of the Year. In his second season as head coach at Southern, Banks led the Jaguars into the NCAA Tournament.
Tulane forward Josh Davis won the state Player of the Year award while Shawn Long of Louisiana-Lafayette took the state Freshman of the Year honor.
Hicks, a 6-7 native of Racine, Wis., transferred to Northwestern from New Mexico Community College. He led the Demons in scoring (14.0 points per game) and rebounding (5.9 average) while ranking 11th in the nation with a 58.3 field goal percentage.
He sank 70 percent of his free throws while averaging 1.7 assists, 1.6 steals in 20.2 minutes per game. Hicks was the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year and a second-team All-Southland choice. He earned Southland Conference All-Tournament honors helping the Demons to a championshp and he received All-District 24 second-team recognition from the National Association of Basketball Coaches. .
Hicks was second nationally in points per 40 minutes (28.3) to Doug McDermott of Creighton. He recovered from a hairline fracture in foot that sidelined him for 20 days late in the season to start and help spark Demons to the Southland tourney title, and into the NCAA Tournament.
Davis, a Shreveport-Huntington product, averaged 12.3 points, 2.1 assists, 2.0 rebounds and sank 32 percent on 3-pointers while leading the Demons with 25.3 minutes per game and starting all 32 games.
An All-Southland Conference third-team selection, Davis earned Southland Conference Tournament MVP honors. The 6-0 guard finished 20
th in school history in scoring (1,136 points) and 10
th in career assists (296).
West, a 5-10 redshirt freshman from Bossier High and Bossier City, was the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and made the five-man Southland All-Defensive Team. He was honorable mention all-conference.
He averaged 10.2 points per game and ranked 11
th nationally in assist/turnover ratio (+2.75), 17
th in steals per game (2.34), and 55
th in assists pg (5.2). West led the Southland in assist/turnover ratio, steals, ranked third in assists and eighth in 3-pointers made per game (1.6). His 83.6 free throw percentage, which included 21 straight makes late in the season, would have led the Southland if he had made three more attempts to reach the ranking minimum of two free throws made per game.
West finished one steal shy of tying NSU's single-season school record. He averaged 2.5 rebounds per game and shot 35 percent on 3-pointers while averaging 25.1 minutes per game.
