LAKE CHARLES, La – The Northwestern State Lady Demon softball team dropped two games to McNeese State Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 and 5-2 in the opening weekend of Southland Conference play.
“It was a tough day for us,” said head coach Donald Pickett. “This conference is really strong and competitive this season, so we knew coming in that this weekend was going to be a challenge.”
The Cowgirls (17-7, 2-0) put the Lady Demons (18-5, 0-2) to an arm's length in the second game of the day as they put runs on the board throughout five innings of the game, including solo homeruns by Katie Roux in the second and fourth, respectively.
In the fifth, junior Cheyenne DelaGarza picked up the lone RBI of the day for NSU as she doubled to right center and sent Natalie Landry home.
Tara McKenney gave the Lady Demons their final run of the day in the sixth as she singled to center field and was forced to third on a line-out by Brittany Virgoe. McKenney advanced home on a wild pitch by senior pitcher Meagan Bond (8-2)
The Lady Demons held the Cowgirls close in the first game, allowing only one run to cross the plate as freshman standout Emily Vincent was walked and crossed the plate off of a single to left field by Taylor Goree.
DelaGarza led NSU from the plate as she went three-for-six on the day.
Senior Kylie Roos (6-1) threw six complete innings allowing only two hits while striking out three in the 1-0 loss.
Senior Brooke Boening (5-3) and freshman Baylee Gray combined for six innings in the circle in game two to allow eight hits.
The Lady Demons will round-out the three game series on Sunday with a single game with the Cowgirls at one o'clock. NSU returns home next weekend to host Nicholls State on Saturday beginning at 1:00 at the Lady Demon Diamond.
