NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State softball team will finish up its four week road stint with a single game at Jackson State on Wednesday beginning at three o'clock.
“This match-up is always good for us,” said head coach Donald Pickett. “We're excited to return home after being on the road for a while.”
In their last meeting in 2011, the Lady Demons (12-2) defeated the Lady Tigers (4-11) 5-1. NSU currently leads the all-time series 6-1.
The Lady Demons made history last week as they went on a 6-0 run to improve to a 12-2 record, which is the best start since the 1990 season when NSU got off to a 16-1 start and finished the season 43-17 overall., 8-4 in the Southland.
Junior shortstop Tara McKenney leads NSU in batting average, runs, hits and stolen bases with .404, 14, 21 and five respectively.
With two outs and a runner on third, McKenney's lone RBI in the bottom of the 10th against host Southern Mississippi sealed a huge win for the Lady Demons at the Southern Mississippi tournament this past weekend.
Senior Brooke Boening (4-1) and junior transfer Kaylee Guidry (3-1) played key roles from the circle last week as well.
Boening threw for 11.3 innings and earned wins against the Golden Eagles and Louisiana Tech as she struck out four and allowing only 10 hits.
Guidry had a stellar 10-inning performance against Southern Mississippi, holding the Golden Eagles to seven hits and striking out three en route to a 3-2 victory. Guidry also aided in the 16th no-hitter in program history against Alcorn State to lead to a .477 ERA on the week.
Jackson State fell to both Evansville and Nebraska-Omaha 5-0 over the weekend.
Sabeana Romero leads the Lady Tigers with 15 hits and three RBI in 42 at-bats.
Breaa Jamerson (3-7) has thrown for 56.1 innings from the circle, collecting 24 strikeouts and a 4.10 ERA.
The Lady Demons make their home debut this weekend as they host the Natchitoches Historic Development Commission Lady Demon Classic beginning on Friday. NSU will kick-off tournament play against Louisiana-Monroe at 12 o'clock at the Lady Demon Diamond.
