10/11/2013 9:21:00 PM

Box Score NATCHITOCHES – A foul and yellow card issued to Northwestern State set up a free kick in the 62nd minute that gave Abilene Christian the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over the Northwestern State women's soccer team Friday night in Southland Conference action.

Natalie Throneberry scored her fifth goal of the season on the free kick after Northwestern State (4-8-1, 2-3-1 Southland Conference) defender Jackie Strug was whistled for the foul just outside of the box.  Abilene Christian improved to 11-2-1 on the year with a 5-2-0 in league play.

Throneberry pushed it through to the right side of the goal just passed the outstretched arms of the NSU goalkeeper Jessica Danku.  Danku played the entire match and finished with eight saves.

"All credit goes to Abilene Christian," said head coach George Van Linder.  "They're a great team.

"We came out in the first 20 minutes and didn't really play the way we had hoped," he said. "We started playing better as the game went on, and it could've gone both ways.  They capitalized on their chances and we did not."

ACU finished the match with 17 shots, 10 in the first half and seven in the second.  NSU had 10 for the night with five in each half.  Shots on-goal were even at eight.

Kelsey Dombrowski played the entire match between the pipes for the Wildcats and collected eight saves.

"It was a great battle between two good teams, and game that the fans were certainly excited to watch," said Van Linder.

Nikki Saunders led the Lady Demons in shots taken with three, two were on-goal.  Brooke Eastburg also had both of her two shots on-goal.

Andrea Carpenter led all players with four shots (one on-goal) followed by Throneberry who finished with three.

Northwestern State has two home matches left for the 2014 season.  McNeese State travels to Natchitoches on Sunday for a 1 o'clock start time, and Nicholls will visit the Lady Demon Soccer Complex on Oct. 18 at 7 o'clock.
