LAKE CHARLES – The Northwestern State track and field team registered five first place performances, including senior
Quiana Griffin's time of 59.28 in the 400m, and a total of 15 top-three finishes on Friday in their first outing of the 2013 season.
Also grabbing gold medal performances were
Wayne Douglas in the triple jump with a mark of 49-02.50,
Janae Allen in the shot put with a throw of 44-08.00,
Angelica Kotun in the 200m clocking in at 26.33 and
Lionel Ellison in the high jump with a leap of 6-04.00.
Allen recorded a third place finish in the weight throw with a heave of 53-03.00 and fellow thrower
Keona Jackson took third in the shot put, recording a mark of 42-06.75.
Lady Demon freshman
Holli Conway placed second in the high jump with a mark of 4-09.75 in her first collegiate appearance.
Keshira McKnight was another freshman that had an impressive showing for the women's team, clocking in at 7.32 in the 55m dash and placing third.
Senior Karensa Ellisa rounded out the medalists for the Lady Demons, finishing second in the 600m with a time of 1:38.25.
"Today was a good start," said Lady Demon head coach
Mike Heimerman. "We had a few nice performances but we still have a long ways to go to get where we want to be. I am excited that the season has started and can't wait to see where this group could end up."
The men's distance medley team of
Albert Gladney,
Dezrick Williams,
Matt Rodell and
Mitch Landry took home the silver, clocking in at 11:48.83, as did sophomore jumper
Emmanuel Williams with a mark of 47-07.00.
Third place finishers for the Demons were
Antwone Cobbin in the 800m (2:04.10),
Aaron Williams in the long jump (23-01.75) and the 4x400 relay team of Cobbin,
Kendal Taylor,
Justin Walker and
Keenan Jackson (3:29.96).
Both Northwestern State squads head to Houston next weekend to compete at the two-day Houston Invitational.
