Box Score NATCHITOCHES – The Lady Demon defense led the Northwestern State soccer team to a double overtime 0-0 tie as they shut out the nation's leading offense in Central Arkansas Friday evening at the Lady Demon soccer complex.
“We've been talking all year long about team defense, and the team executed the plan perfectly,” said head coach
George Van Linder.
The match marked the first Southland Conference game for both teams. NSU (5-5-1, 0-0-1) will take Sunday off, but will travel to Oral Roberts next Friday.
UCA (8-2-1, 0-0-1) was held to 21 shots in the push as the Sugar Bears suffered their third shutout of the season.
Huge saves by freshman goalkeeper
Brooke Bourbonais kept NSU in the game after losing a player to a red card foul with 16:18 remaining in the second half.
The biggest save came with about four minutes to go in the second overtime against a one-on-one situation with Adriana Lucar, the nation's leading scorer, where Bourbonais made a diving save to keep the Lady Demons alive. The NSU defense held Lucar to just four shots.
“Brooke's save was phenomenal, and was definitely something that put us on our feet,” said Van Linder. “We're really proud of how she has come in as a freshman and made a save like that.”
Bourbonais made eight saves in net.
The Lady Demons took 17 shots en route to the tie.
Shelby Balmer was a true test for UCA's defense as she took three shots.
