NATHCITOCHES – The Northwestern State Lady Demon soccer team will travel to Grambling Friday looking to extend their winning streak to four. Game time is slated for 3 o'clock.
“We look forward to facing an in-state opponent,” said head coach
George Van Linder. “It's always an exciting game, and everything leads us to believe it will be that way again this year.”
NSU (4-4) shut out both Arkansas-Little Rock and Arkansas-Pine Bluff on the road last weekend. Grambling (0-2) fell to Arkansas State 2-6 on Sunday.
Freshman
Cassandra Briscoe notched two goals over UALR to lead the Lady Demons to a 4-0 victory.
Junior
Yanci Johnson also added two tallies on the weekend, scoring her fifth and sixth goals of the year to break her career high of goals scored in a single season. In 2011, Johnson scored four goals on the season.
Against UAPB, Jacke Strug and
Ashlee Savona found their way into the scoring column as well.
As a defender, Strug found the back of the net with less than three minutes remaining against UALR for her second goal of the season. Savona slipped one past UAPB goalkeeper Alyssa Cobbs to give the Lady Demons a 4-0 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining in regulation.
Freshman
Peyton Rector scored the fifth and final goal of the contest with less than 40 seconds left on the clock to notch her first collegiate goal.
Sierra Arndt leads the Lady Tigers with two goals, both against ASU.
“Grambling hasn't played a lot of games this year so we don't know much about them,” stated Van Linder.
NSU returns home on Sunday to face Louisiana-Lafayette at 2 o'clock. After the match, the Lady Demons will host a soccer clinic in honor of Youth Soccer Month, sponsored by the U.S. Youth Soccer Association.
