Lady Demons look to stay hot at Houston

HOUSTON, Texas – After a weekend washed away by rainfall, the surging Northwestern State softball team will get back on the field Wednesday with a 6 p.m. non-conference affair at the University of Houston.

NSU (10-13) has won eight of its last nine games, and comes in off a two-game sweep at Southern last Wednesday. The Lady Demons trailed the Jaguars 5-0 in the sixth inning of the second game when they pushed eight runs across to take control and went on to win 8-6.

Brianna Rodriguez and Cassandra Barefield will look to extend their hitting streaks of nine and eight games, respectively. Rodriguez leads the team with a .423 OBP and .587 slugging, while Barefield is first with three homers and 14 RBI.

Rodriguez also earned honorable mention for SLC Hitter of the Week on Monday after going four-for-eight with three doubles in the doubleheader against Southern.

Houston (11-13) is coming off a 1-2 weekend against Marshall, and pushed No. 10 UL-Lafayette to extra innings in a doubleheader last Wednesday.The Cougars are led by junior Reina Gaber who tops the team with a .392 average. Sophomore Haley Outon and junior Holly Anderson provide the power with five home runs apiece.

The Lady Demons (10-13) were scheduled to open conference play last Saturday with a doubleheader at Sam Houston State, but wet fields caused the series to be postponed. The teams will instead play a doubleheader on Sunday, April 1 with a 3 p.m. tentative start time.

NSU will open up conference play at home with a two game series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The teams will play Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at noon.
