NATCHITOCHES -- The final quarter of the 16-game Southland Conference basketball race begins at home Wednesday night for the Northwestern State Demons, with senior center
William Mosley poised to match Alonzo Mourning and move into fifth in NCAA history in career blocked shots with a good night as NSU plays host to Sam Houston State.
Tipoff is 7 p.m. in Prather Coliseum as the Demons (15-12 overall, 7-5 in the Southland) hope to maintain the momentum generated by an impressive 100-86 win at home Saturday over 17-12 Campbell in the Sears BracketBusters. Wednesday night's game is the next-to-last home appearance for Mosley and the Demons, who play Saturday at league-leading Texas-Arlington and wrap up their home schedule next Wednesday night against Nicholls. The regular season closes March 3 with a visit to Stephen F. Austin.
Sam Houston was a one-point loser to Toledo in its Sears BracketBusters game Saturday, but the Bearkats (11-16 overall, 5-7 in the SLC) have won their last two conference games, and three of the last four. There are four Bearkats scoring in double figures, led by 6-4 guard Konner Tucker at 12.2 per game.
The Demons need one win to assure themselves of a spot in the eight-team field for the Southland Conference Tournament March 7-10 in Katy, Texas.
Mosley stands seventh on the NCAA career blocks list with 447. He is five away from equalling Travis Williams, who had 452 from 1997-2001 at Hampton. Mosley will then need one more to match Mourning's 453 when he played for Georgetown from 1987-92. NBA star Tim Duncan is fourth all-time with 483 blocks while at Wake Forest from 1992-97.
Mosley had a career-high 19 points in the win over Campbell while junior guard
Shamir Davis led the way with 25 points. Davis tops NSU with his 13.7 scoring average, followed by Mosley at 11.1 and
Louis Ellis at 10.9. Mosley is averaging 9.9 rebounds and 4.3 blocks.
The game will be broadcast on the Demon Sports Network, flagshipped by 100.7 KZBL FM in Natchitoches and including 99.9 KTEZ FM in Many and 92.1 KSYR FM in Shreveport. The audio and video will be streamed on nsudemons.com with Twitter updates provided at the @NSUDemonsMBB account.
