Box Score NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State's pressure defense was too much for the nation's second-best shooting team Saturday as the Demons harrassed Campbell's Fighting Camels into their second-worst aim of the season and posted 100-86 Sears BracketBusters college basketball win at Prather Coliseum.
Campbell (17-12) came in making 50.2 percent from the floor but managed only 39.4 percent accuracy against Northwestern (15-12), which ended a three-game losing streak while making 50.8 percent of its shots. Trailing by 20 points, the Camels began sending the Demons to the free throw line with 7:26 remaining, but Campbell got no closer than 12.
Shamir Davis had his fourth career 20-point game with 25, including 13 of 14 free throws, to lead NSU.
William Mosley posted a career-best 19 points despite sinking only 5-of-20 free throws.
Louis Ellis added 15 points and
Gary Stewart a season-high 13 for the Demons, who led 42-32 at halftime and made 13 of their first 17 shots afterward as they sank 69 percent in the final period.
NSU set a school record with 53 free throw tries, 37 in the second half, and 24 in the last 7:26, when Campbell allowed the Demons only three shots from the floor, only one in 12 possessions until the final one. Other than Mosley, the rest of the team shot 28-of-33 in the game at the line, 18-for-20 in the final half.
But the zone press used by the Demons keyed the outcome. By halftime, Campbell had 16 turnovers, two over the Camels' per game average. The visitors never led and after the opening point, ironically a Mosley free throw, the game was never tied. NSU outscored Campbell 23-11 in points off turnovers, 19-2 in the first half.
“Our two rotations made a difference,” said 13
th-year Demons coach
Mike McConathy. “We got contributions from everybody. We defended aggressively and our pressure disrupted them allowing us to get the upper hand.
“That's a very good basketball team. They had a rough day today, and we had a lot to do with that, because of our effort and because we went out having fun playing together,” he said.
Mosley rejected four shots, his season's average, and climbed into seventh place on the NCAA career blocks list with 447. He needs five more to tie for sixth, and six more to tie for fifth with Georgetown and NBA star Alonzo Mourning at 453. Mosley also snagged 12 rebounds and had two steals.
Contributions such as eight points from
O.J. Evans and seven rebounds by
James Hulbin were significant in the outcome.
Campbell's 6-8 center Eric Griffin had 15 points and 15 rebounds, along with 3 blocks, getting his points at the free throw line, where he was 11 of 21. Darren White and Andrew Ryan also scored 15 for the Camels, who got 14 by Lorne Merthie.
Northwestern raced to a 20-9 lead and was comfortably ahead afterwards. The margin never was under 11 after Mosley opened the second half with a dunk 35 seconds into play. A 10-1 run over 98 seconds started by a Stewart 3-pointer and ended with one from Davis, lifting the Demons into the first of two 22-point leads, 74-52, with 10:47 remaining.
It was the first 100-point game for NSU since an early season 103-94 decision last year over Tennessee-Martin. The Demons moved to 13-0 this season when they shoot better than the opposition. In their three-game skid, the Demons made only 34 percent from the floor.
The Demons stay at home next Wednesday night to host Sam Houston State as the final quarter of the 16-game Southland Conference season begins.
