Lady Demons suffer tough loss to ORU

Box Score TULSA, Okla. – Jennifer Abernathy's two goals within a minute of each other late in the match Friday night helped Oral Roberts take down the Northwestern State women's soccer team in the final minutes in Southland Conference action.

“We played well enough to win during the first 85 minutes of the game, and then we collapsed,” said head coach George Van Linder. “As a team we are crushed; we have more pride than that, and we came here with the idea of turning things around after the result of our last meeting with ORU.”

The Lady Demons (5-6-1, 0-1-1) were able to hold the Golden Eagles (7-4-2, 1-1) to a scoreless game, until the final nine minutes of the match.

ORU's Megan Giles scored first as she received a pass from Mariah Morgan and found freshman goalkeeper Brooke Bourbonais out of position. Giles was able to find the back of the net with an open shot at the 82-minute mark.

Abernathy added her two tallies to the board putting ORU up 3-0 with less than three minutes remaining on the clock. Assists on Abernathy's goals went to Giles and Lauren Parks.

Bourbonais made eight saves in net.

“We won't give up,” said Van Linder. “We have a quality 90 minutes in us, it just did not show tonight.”

The Lady Demons return home on Sunday to face SLC rival Stephen F. Austin. Kick-off is slated for 2 o'clock at the Lady Demon soccer complex.
