Box Score NATCHITOCHES –
Ashlee Savona scored the game winning goal that gave the Northwestern State Lady Demon soccer team their first Southland Conference win of the season over Nicholls 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
NSU improves to 6-10-1 overall, 1-5-1 in the SLC. Nicholls falls to 5-12 overall, 0-7 in the Southland Conference.
“This win was long overdue, but we're so excited to get it,” said head coach
George Van Linder. “It wasn't always pretty, but the effort was fantastic.”
Nicholls got on the board first at the 24-minute mark as Spencer Valdespino received a pass across the top of the box and shot into the right side of the goal, just out of reach of goalkeeper
Brooke Bourbonais.
The Lady Demons did not hesitate to answer back as
Shelby Balmer put one into the back of the net off of a quick pass from
Rebecca Furlow at the 26-minute mark.
Savona sealed the win for NSU when she took advantage of a fumble by Colonel's goalkeeper Amanda Boylson, and scored at the 69-minute mark.
Bourbonais made seven saves in net to notch her fourth win of the season.
“To get a win on a Sunday after the other team scores first feels good,” said Van Linder. “We really buckled down in the second half in order to get this win.”
The Lady Demons wrap-up the 2012 season as they travel to Southeastern on Friday. Kick-off is slated for 3 o'clock.
