Demons head to Nicholls aiming for 2-0 start, with milestones looming

THIBODAUX – With senior center William Mosley on the verge of cracking the NCAA career top 25 for blocked shots, and coach Mike McConathy nearing his 900th career game as a collegiate coach, Northwestern State aims for its fifth win in seven games Wednesday evening and most importantly, hopes to post a 2-0 Southland Conference basketball mark after a 6:30 contest at Nicholls State.

The Demons are 8-7 overall after whipping Texas State 83-68 at home last Saturday in NSU's league opener. Nicholls is 4-10 overall and 0-2 in the conference, beaten 91-50 last Wednesday at Texas-San Antonio and 85-55 last Saturday at Texas-Arlington. Before those games, the Colonels had won three of their last five with the only losses to Texas and North Carolina.

The 6:30 game will be broadcast on the Demon Sports Network, flagshipped by 100.7 KZBL FM in Natchitoches and including 92.1 KSYR FM in Shreveport and 99.9 KTEZ FM in Many, beginning at 6:15 with the start of the pregame show. The audio is available free of charge at nsudemons.com while in-game notes and news will be available on the @NSUDemonsmbb Twitter account.

McConathy will coach his 899th career game, including 511 in 16 seasons at Bossier Parish Community College and 388 in his 13 years with Northwestern. He has won 544 times and owns a 61 percent career winning average.

Mosley is four blocks shy of cracking the NCAA career Top 25 in blocked shots with 392. Ironically, that would tie him with former Demon D'or Fischer, who had 202 as a freshman and sophomore with Northwestern (2000-02) and the rest in his final two seasons playing at West Virginia. If Mosley can maintain his current pace, he can finish fifth all-time, just behind Tim Duncan and ahead of Alonzo Mourning.

The 6-7 post player is averaging 9.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 3.9 blocks per game. His former Shreveport-Huntington teammate, guard Shamir Davis, leads the Demons with a 13.3 scoring average, followed by Shreveport-Booker T. Washington product James Hulbin at 10.3 and Shreveport-Southwood's Louis Ellis at 10.1 per game.

The Colonels, with 10 first-year players, are topped by 6-5 freshman forward Trevon Lewis, who is scoring 13.9 points and averaging 6.2 rebounds per game, both team bests.

Nicholls upset the Demons in Stopher Gym last March 2, 83-81 in overtime, in an outcome that ultimately denied Northwestern a share of the 2011 Southland title.
