Box Score HOUSTON — Natchitoches native Yanci Johnson's three points Friday night gave Northwestern State a 2-1 women's soccer win over Prairie View A&M for its third win in a row.
Johnson scored the first goal of the game in the fifth minute off of a pass from Meghan Hunter to give the Lady Demons (3-1) a 1-0 lead. It was Hunter's fourth point of the young season.
The Lady Demons carried that score all the way until halftime.
Twenty-five seconds into the second half ,Prairie View's (0-4) J.D. Devany scored the tying goal to make it 1-1 early in the frame.
“We couldn't finish,” head coach Jimmy Mitchell said. “It was disappointing to let them back in the game like that, but we regrouped and I feel we did that very well.”
In the 41st minute, Johnson collected her third point of the game and the season with an assist to freshman Alex Peterman for her first goal of the season.
The Lady Demons outshot the Lady Panthers 23-5 in the game.
“It was tough tonight because there was a storm blowing in that carried 35 mph winds,” Mitchell said.
Northwestern State will continue their road stint in Houston to face Houston Baptist University on Sunday at 1:00.
“Houston Baptist will be a tough test for us, especially on the road,” Mitchell said. “They won their conference last year and have already beaten one Southland team this season.”
The Lady Demons will end its road trip against Jackson State next Friday in Mississippi and then return home to take the field against Tulsa on Sunday.
