Box Score MONROE – Northwestern State's offense showed up for duty on Tuesday afternoon as the Lady Demons downed Louisiana-Monroe, 4-2, in women's college soccer action.

The win was the first for the Lady Demons (1-1) as they complete a two-game road trip to start the season.  They'll open the home slate on Friday at 7 against Arkansas-Little Rock.  ULM (1-1-1) lost for the first time on the young season.

“It was a good win for us,” said head coach Jimmy Mitchell.  “Early on, we played really well and applied a lot of pressure which led to an own-goal.  Then we went up 2-0 but kind of relaxed a bit and let them score to cut it to 2-1.”

An “own goal” gave the Lady Demons a 1-0 lead just 4:48 into the match but Ashlee Savona netted her first goal of the season when she put NSU up 2-0 off a rebound and assist from Meghan Hunter.

ULM cut the margin to 2-1 with a goal in the 14th minute.  The scoring would subside for the next 57 minutes until Hailey Altenburg scored from the right side of the box on an attack and off a pass from Chelsea Schaefer to make it 3-1.

But the Warhawks quickly bounced back and cut the gap to 3-2 just a minute later on a Taylor Epperson score.

“We came out in the second half and did a good job of getting another goal and going up 3-1, but again, we didn't apply the pressure and put them away and let them back in it.  But I'm proud of the way we played and the end result is what matters.”

The Lady Demons put the game away eight minutes later when Theresa Halle netted an unassisted goal from 30 yards out that skidded the top of the net.

NSU pounded the net with 18 shots and 10 of those on-goal.  Both Halle and Altenburg each had four shots and three on-goal while Savona took two shots with both of them on the net.

Lady Demon goalkeeper Jessica Danku notched the win after she made six saves in playing the entire 90 minutes.

The win was the sixth straight victory over ULM in the series as NSU has outscored the Warhawks by a combined margin of 22-5 during the streak.
