LAFAYETTE – Northwestern State opened up the 2011 soccer season with a 1-0 overtime loss to Louisiana-Lafayette here Friday night - the third consecutive overtime game between the two schools.

An own goal credited to ULL's Melissa Minton in the 93rd minute was the winner after both teams recorded shutouts in regulation time.

“It was crowded in the box,” head coach Jimmy Mitchell said of the game-winning shot off a corner kick. “It was an unfortunate situation and was put in by one of our own.”

It was the third year in a row the two teams have gone the extra time and tied 0-0 with the game won on a golden goal.  Last year, NSU freshman goalkeeper Jessica Danku sailed a 60-footer off a free kick to defeat the Ragin Cajuns.

“These games are always good," said Mitchell.  "For the past few years, it has come down to situations like that.

The Lady Demons took 10 shots with six being on goal while two of those coming from freshman Alex Petermann.

“Petermann came in the second half and created havoc on them (ULL) with two great shots,” Mitchell said.  “She is going to be a very good player for us.

“(Chelsea) Schaefer and (Alex) Rios played very well also and impacted us from the beginning,” Mitchell said. “I was very pleased with the way our freshman played.

“Our returning players played their hearts out and gave 100% out there and you hate to lose like that,” said Mitchell. “It was our first game (of the season) and we'll bounce back and be ready for the next game.”

The Lady Demons will next be in action on Tuesday when they visit Louisiana-Monroe at 4:30.  NSU will open its home season next Friday night against Arkansas-Little Rock.
