DEMONS GAME NOTES

CINCINNATI -- Two college basketball teams stinging from Saturday defeats meet Monday night when Northwestern State visits Cincinnati, which likely will drop out of the Top 25 rankings after a two-point home loss to Presbyterian.

Tipoff is 6:05 CST for the contest, which will be televised by Fox Sports Ohio and will be broadcast on the Demon Sports Network, including 100.7 FM KZBL in Natchitoches, 92.1 KSYR FM in Shreveport and 99.9 KTEZ FM in Many.

The Demons (2-2) were handled soundly by a talented Marshall team 83-61 Saturday night, while Cincinnati (2-1) was shocked at home 56-54, losing a home non-conference outing for the first time in 21 games. The Bearcats came into the contest ranked 20th in both major polls.

The teams each beat Alabama State, UC by 25 at home last Sunday, and NSU by 7 in Montgomery, Ala., last Thursday night.

Junior point guard Shamir Davis, on the strength of a career-best 27 point outburst at Alabama State, tops Northwestern in scoring with a 13.8 average. He is hitting 51 percent of his shots, a figure that climbs to 66 percent for his tries inside the 3-point arc. Junior college transfer Gary Roberson, a Natchitoches native, is the Demons' other double-figure points producer with an 11.5 average.

Senior center William Mosley averages 8.8 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks. The Demons are swatting away 8.5 shots per game and averaging 9.2 steals per outing.

The contest concludes a busy stretch of five games in the season's first 10 days for the Demons, who come home to play Jacksonville State Friday night in Prather Coliseum.

Northwestern is struggling with its long-distance and free throw aim, but is doing a fine job defending opposing shooters.

The Demons have held their opponents to 39 percent shooting aim, only 27 percent on 3-pointers.  With the ball, NSU has made only 56 percent on free throws and only 25 percent on 3-pointers. NSU is overall hitting 40 percent on shots from the floor, a figure that soars to 54 percent on shots inside the 3-point arc.
