NATCHITOCHES -- Northwestern State forward
Meghan Hunter, recently voted one of the 20 best players in the
Southland Conference, will lead the Lady Demons into their final regular season home match at 7 o'clock
on Friday against
Central Arkansas in league action at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.
Hunter will join five other players -
Rachel O'Steen,
Kayla King,
Haley Cheshier,
Sam Furlow, and
Christian Marks, who will be recognized in pregame "Senior Day" ceremonies as they take the home field for the last time in their career.
"We are very proud of our seniors and how they represent this team, but more importantly this university," said head coach Jimmy Mitchell. "They all exemplify what it means to be a student-athlete and have impacts on the community, the classroom, and the field."
Hunter, who missed all of last season due to a knee injury, has come back with a vengeance this year and currently leads the Lady Demons in all triple crown categories with five goals, four assists, and 14 points.
Quite possibly the biggest games of her career came at home back in September against Texas Southern when she recorded her first career hat-trick.
"Meghan is extremely dedicated and pushes her teammates to be better," said Mitchell. "Having her back for a fifth season has been very nice."
O'Steen will end her four-year career at Northwestern State in the top five five on the school's all-time career assists record list. She's currently the single-season record holder with nine assits set in 2009.
"A player like Rachel doesn't happen very often," said Mitchell. "She has great athleticism and work ethic. She takes that work ethic and applies it to everything she does."
King has been one of the steadiest Lady Demons the past few years having scored at least six points every season of her career for the exception of this season as she has battled injuries.
"Kayla has been hampered with injuries, especially this season, and that is not the way she wanted to end her career," said Mitchell. "Still, she hasn't let something like that change her character."
Cheshier this season ranks sixth in points and third in assists. She has played in 72 games over the course of her four-year career.
"We have really seen Haley grow into a mature lady and student," said Mitchell. "We'll be happy to watch her continue to grow and take that into the world."
Furlow and Marks both will end their careers after three years due to graduation, but each has shown how they can be leaders on and off the field by helping the Lady Demons in contributing roles.
"Sam is a perfect teammate," said Mitchell. "She continually stays positive through adversity and is always there to pick her teammates up."
"Everything any person ever needs to know about Christian can be found in the way she continues to battle back from injuries to play college athletics," said Mitchell. "She will be successful in whatever she does in life."
The game against Central Arkansas, the first of three remaining on the regular season, is a crucial one for the Lady Demons as they will need to win all three games to have a chance for a spot in the postseason conference tournament.
