Lady Demons lose third straight on shutout by Texas State

Box Score NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State Lady Demon soccer squad continued its midseason slump here Friday night as it was blanked by Texas State, 2-0, in Southland Conference action.

The loss was the third straight suffered by the Lady Demons (7-8, 1-4 SLC) and the fifth defeat in the last seven games.  Texas State improved to 8-5 on the year and 3-1 in league action after it notched its second straight win and sixth victory in the last seven games. 

The Bobcats held NSU to just four shots in the contest as the Lady Demons were held out of the net for the fifth game this season including three straight.

“They (Texas State) had some chances and some were dangerous, but I still didn't think they would score except for the two they did score,” said head coach Jimmy Mitchell. “Both of their goals were scored on our free kick attempts that they were able to counter, and we could not stop them.

“Sometimes when things aren't going your way, it seems you can't buy a break.”

Early in the first half, Texas State's Sydney Curry scored her fourth goal of the season on a beautiful pass from Felicia Leask to put the Bobcats up 1-0 in the 13th minute.

The Lady Demon offense was held without a shot in the first half as the Bobcats went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

“In the first half, I felt like we were just sitting around waiting for something good to happen,” said Mitchell. “It will not happen that way.  You have go to go out and make it happen.”

In the 55th minute, Bobcat point leader Leask scored here seventh goal on the season off a rebound from Kendall Webber.

Still, the Lady Demons started creating opportunities and tried to get back in the game.  NSU had a golden chance when Texas State goalkeeper Natalie Gardini dropped a ball in the box while NSU's Alex Petermann tried to capatilize on the mistake, but Gardini made a spectacular grab on the ground to keep the ball out of the net.

“In the second half I thought we played harder and gave ourselves a few chances to get back in the game,” said Mitchell “The keeper drops the ball right in front of the net and you can't finish it, it seems to be the story of our past couple of weeks.”

NSU had three shots on goal coming from Ashlee Savona, Petermann, and Jeanette Coronel.

Lady Demon goalkeeper Jessica Danku collected 12 saves on 19 shots and played all 90 minutes.

Northwestern State will continue its last regular season homestand with Texas-San Antonio in a crucial match Sunday at 2 o'clock.  San Antonio defeated Central Arkansas Friday night 2-1 to run its league record to 2-2 on the season - one win ahead of the Lady Demons.  UCA fell to 1-3 in conference play while in other action, Sam Houston State (1-3) fell to Lamar (4-0).  Every team is still vying for one of the six spots in the league postseason tournament that will be hosted by NSU Nov. 3-6.
