David Aguilar

  • Title
    WBB Assistant Coach
Calling someone two-faced is usually not a compliment, but there are definitely two sides to Coach David Aguilar.

There's the tough, demanding coach, who pushes his players to be better than even they might have imagined they could be.  The man know as "Ag" is one of those coaches who doesn't have to holler and scream to get across his intensity and make his point. When he speaks, the Lady Demons definitely listen.

And often, the laugh. As hard-nosed as he can be at practice or in games or in a tape session, Coach Ag is the Lady Demons' teddy bear away from basketball. He's cracking jokes, often at his own expense, and always with a purpose to create smiles and strengthen bonds in the Lady Demon basketball family.

Aguliar (say is name "AGG-you-lar") is recruiting coordinator and defensive strategist for Northwestern. Beginning his third season working for Coach Jennifer Graf, he coaches the guards.

He considers the legendary Pete Newell as one of his main basketball coaching influences. He is a friend adn admirer of LSU head coach Pokey Chatman and Oklahoma State coach Kurt Budke.

In his role as recruiting coordinator, Coach Ag has an excuse for his addiction to his cell phone. More often than not, if you see him away from the court, he's wearing his cellular ear piece.

Along with that role, Aguilar monitors the academic progress of the athletes; assists with fundraising and alumni events as well as the media guide; bid and purchase as well as inventory of all equipment; guard play development and inbounds plays; scouting of opponents; organize film exchange; supervises managers and student coaches; and assists with summer camps.

His dozen seasons in coaching include highly successful stints with Louisiana and Texas high schools along with being part of the nationally-renowned women's program at Trinity Valley (Texas) Community College.

Aguilar came to Northwestern just before the start of the preseason practice October 2004 from Ruston High School, where he was an assistant coach in 2003-04 as the Lady Bearcats went 28-9 and reached the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. Before coaching at Ruston, he was on the women's basketball staff at Trinity Valley CC, helping the Lady Cardinals to a No. 2 national ranking in junior college competition and a 33-1 record before a loss to arch-rival Tyler Junior College in the regional finals.

He was head coach of the girls team and volunteer assistant for the boy's team at Mexia (Texas) High School, which captured the 2001 Texas Class 3A state championship.

Aguilar is a 1994 graduate of Texas A&M-Commerce, where he was a Dean's List student in Kinesiology and interdisciplinary studies, and also holds an associates' degree from Trinity Valley, where he was also on the Dean's List.

A 33-year old native of Brownsboro, Texas, Aguilar is the only sone of Emilio and Anita Aguilar. He has three sisters.

Among his hobbies are reading, listening to music, watching movies and being a couch potato while chatting with friends and recruits on his cell phone. Coach Ag enjoys cooking Mexican food, especially his patented tacos, for the Lady Demons.

In August 2005, he became a champion golfer, much to the surprise of Coach Graf. Coach Ag was part of the third-place prize winning team at the Don't Die Wondering Golf Classic XVI, whit his chief contributions apparently his motivational skills and recruiting ability.

If he's not bragging about Lady Demon basketball, his cooking or his golf ability, Coach Ag might be enjoying a Notre Dame football game on television, or looking forward to the next one. He's impressed by the fact that the Lady Demons are 1-0 against Notre Dame.

His greatest recruiting feat occurred on Friday, Oct. 28, 2005, when he successfully proposed to former Lady Demon forward Amanda Bennett, after they began dating that spring.  The were married last May 6 and are expecting their first child next April.
