After longstanding concussion symptoms forced him to retire from athletic competition, Colby Koontz is in his second season as a student assistant coach with the Northwestern State basketball team.
 
Koontz signed with Northwestern State as a two-sport student-athlete (basketball and baseball) and arrived on campus in the summer of 2015. During preseason workouts that fall, Koontz suffered a concussion during practice and was never cleared to resume competition.
 
Koontz maintained a presence around both the Demon basketball and baseball teams as he worked to return to competition.
 
A Dean’s List student, who is a two-time member of the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Spring Honor Roll, Koontz posted a 4.0 grade-point average in his first year of college.
 
A biology/pre-med major, Colby is the son of Brent and Angi Koontz and enjoyed a standout high school athletic career at Pioneer-Pleasant Vale High School in Enid, Oklahoma.
 
At Pioneer-Pleasant Vale, Koontz earned four letters each in baseball and basketball. He was named the All-Northwest Oklahoma Player of the Year in basketball and was a CTB All-Star, averaging 15.8 points, 10 rebounds and four assists per game
 
He was a four-time all-conference baseball player and graduated with a 3.98 GPA.
