Steve Gaspard (football, 1966-69) – Tight end from Cottonport set the Demons’ career receptions record with 85, beginning with 31 (477 yards, 5 TDs) as a freshman for the undefeated 1966 team … that was one off the team lead by All-American two-way star Al Dodd … topped the Gulf States Conference freshmen in catches … 24-365, 3 TDs as a junior in 1968 … led 1969 team with 22 catches (280 yards, 2 TDs) … held the career receptions mark for six years, until wideout Mike Almond broke it … voted by players as the 1969 team captain.
Mike Green (football, track & field, 1997-2000) – The NFL Draft’s 2000 “Mr. Irrelevant” became one of the great success stories in draft history, playing nine years in the pro ranks, most as a productive starting safety for the Chicago Bears …426 tackles, 21 pass breakups, 7 forced fumbles, 6 sacks and 4 interceptions in 104 games (48 starts) from 2000-08 … twice over 100 tackles, 129 in 2002 and 106 in 2004 … led all NFL defensive backs in tackles in 2002 … was the 254

Al Miller (football assistant coach, 1975-78) -- As linebackers coach on A.L. Williams’ staff, he was in charge of strength and conditioning as he developed innovative approaches that ultimately made him a legend in the emerging field … his strength and conditioning program quickly became regarded as one of the best in the nation … worked with athletes in all sports whenever asked, including during the early years of women’s scholarship sports … he designed the NSU weight room to be at the cutting edge for one its size at that time … he wrote a book on how to train in strength and conditioning which is used by our present staff and others around the nation and world … helped many former NSU players become NFL coaches (Barry Rubin, Bill Johnson) and players after he rapidly climbed into the NFL ranks himself … received the NFL Lifetime Achievement Award from the league’s strength and conditioning coaches after retiring at the end of the 2014 season … a member of the inaugural USA Strength and Conditioning Hall of Fame class in 2003, Miller spent 23 NFL seasons as a strength coach with Denver (1985-92), New York Giants (1993-96), Atlanta (1997-2006) and Oakland (2013-14) … his teams went to four AFC Championship games, two NFC Championship games and four Super Bowls and he also worked two Pro Bowls … honors from the NFL strength coaches included the President’s Award (1993), the Emrich-Riecke-Jones Award (1998) and the NFL Strength Coach of the Year Award (2004) … the 2007 recipient of the Legends in the Field award from the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association … was a Hall of Fame receiver at his alma mater, ULM.
J.M. Maricelli (football, 1958-61) – All-Gulf States Conference fullback in 1960 … played two ways, cornerback on defense … played behind Charlie Tolar in his first two seasons … was not stopped for loss in his senior season … averaged nearly 5 yards a carry in 1961 as a senior … averaged 10.8 yards per carry as a sophomore backing up Tolar … 1961 team co-captain, best offensive back and Demon MVP.
Warren Patterson (football, 1995-98) – Ranks among NSU passing leaders as the starter on the 1997 Southland champion and, when not injured, on the 1998 Demons’ squad that made the FCS semifinals in its second straight playoff appearance … threw for 3,851 yards (seventh in school history) and 29 TDs (third all-time) in his career … tossed 12 TDs (seventh all-time) in nine regular-season games in 1998, including 4 (tying a school record, broken in 2014) vs. Henderson State.
Larry Robinson (football, 1980-84) – A four-year starter as an outside linebacker, the 1984 second-team All-Gulf Star Conference pick (56 tackles, 1 interception, 2 sacks) helped the Demons win the GSC championship and shut out Southern Mississippi 22-0 … that defense developed the Purple Swarm nickname and led FCS (then Division I-AA) in scoring defense (9.0 ppg) … the 5-9, 191-pounder had 188 career tackles, 6 fumble recoveries, 2 interceptions, 8 pass breakups in 39 games as a Demon … Robinson reached the NFL as a strong safety, going to camp in 1985 and 1986 with the Miami Dolphins and lasting into the 1987 season with the New York Jets, where he appeared in three regular-season games.
Kenny Wright (football, 1996-98) – A safety converted to cornerback in 1998, Wright had career totals of 148 tackles, 5 interceptions and 9 pass breakups while starting for Southland champion teams in 1997 and 1998 after the Ruston native transferred to NSU in 1996 from Arkansas after his freshman season … a fourth-round 1999 NFL Draft choice (Vikings), he was also a starter for Houston, Jacksonville and Washington in nine pro seasons, making 245 tackles and 7 interceptions … chosen among the Top 100 Demon Football Players selected in the 2007 centennial celebration of NSU football.
Jacqueline Canton (women’s track and field, 2000-2003) – Still holds school high jump record with a 5-11 ¼ clearance in 2001 … three-time NCAA Championships qualifier, indoors in 2001 as a triple jumper (41-2 ½) and 2003 (5-10 ¾ high jump),
outdoors with her school record high jump mark in 2001 … captured 2000 Southland Conference Outdoor event crowns in the high jump (5-10 ½) and triple jump (40-1 ½) … won three more Southland Conference championships in the high jump indoors (2000, 5-8; 2001, 5-8; 2003, 5-10 1/4), giving her a total of five Southland titles.
Brittany Littlejohn (women’s track and field, 2000-03) – Set longstanding school record with wind-aided 13.13 time in 100 meter hurdles at the NCAA Mideast Regional in 2003, advancing to the NCAA Outdoors for the second straight season … owned the Southland hurdles competition in her final three years, capturing five of a possible six titles … twice won the 100 meter hurdles Southland Conference championship (2002, 13.42; 2003, 13.47) and claimed three straight 60m hurdles gold medals at the Southland Indoors (2001, 8.66; 2002, 8.45; 2003, 8.53) … NCAA Outdoor Championships 100m hurdles qualifier in 2002 with a 13.42 time, finishing 14
th at the NCAA meet … honors graduate.
Janice Miller (women’s track and field, 1989-92) – Won 1992 Southland Conference Outdoor high jump title, was SLC runner-up in 1991 and 1989 … won as a senior with 5-6 ½ clearance … 5-8 ¾ clearance to finish second at 1991 SLC Outdoors set a school record that stood for 7 years … also had team’s top marks in 100 (12.65) and 200 (24.9) as a junior … 5-8 ½ season’s best as a senior at NLU Invitational … missed most of her sophomore year with a stress fracture … set a school record with a 5-8 jump while finishing second at the 1989 SLC Outdoors as a freshman; the clearance equaled the winning mark and shared the SLC record … joined shot putter Peggy Lewis (already in the N-Club HOF) as the inaugural inductees on the Lady Demon Wall of Honor launched by then coach Chris Maggio.
Ryan Bundy (men’s basketball, 1995-98) – Four-year starter at point guard set the Demons’ career assists record, breaking the mark by Roman Banks with a total of 552 that stood until Jalan West shattered it in 2015 … he averaged 5.4 assists per game, playing 102 games, starting 92 … also ranked fifth in school history with 160 steals (1.6 average) … chosen NSU’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 1997-98 … elected team captain as a senior … Academic All-District VI selection in 1997-98 … averaged 7.6 points (776 career), with a high of 23 in a 1995 game against Grambling … single-game assists best was 13 as a senior against Southeastern Louisiana, with 7 steals vs. Grambling in 1996 tops in his career … had six double-doubles (scoring/assists) … led Southland Conference with 5.8 assists pg as a junior … chosen for the 100-man “All-Century Team” as part of the “Fab 50” list of top players in NSU’s Division I history from 1977-2013, marking the Demon basketball centennial.
Earnest Reliford (men’s basketball, 1977-82) – “Big E” was a national recruit from Ashland who stayed home to play for the Demons … ranked 10
th at NSU in career blocks (78, 0.74 pg) and in single-season FT% (85.6, 113-132 as a senior) … Reliford shot 49% overall in his career, 77% on FTs … as a senior for the most successful Demon team (19-9) in a 26-season span (1974-2001), averaged 13.1 ppg, 6.0 rpg … chosen for the 100-man “All-Century Team” as part of the “Fab 50” list of top players in NSU’s Division I history from 1977-2013, marking the Demon basketball centennial.
Wayne Waggoner (men’s basketball, 1980-82) – NBA Draft pick (1983, 6

th all-time at the end of her career, and finished her career second all-time at NSU in assists (609, 5.4 average) and sixth in steals (238, 2.1 average) … she twice led the team in scoring and topped Coach James Smith’s clubs in assists and steals in each of her four seasons … Clark led the Lady Demons to the 1998-99 Southland championship and a WNIT appearance (loss at Arkansas) … NSU was 63-24 in her final three seasons, including a 24-6 record in her senior year … one of only four Lady Demons selected first-team All-Southland in multiple years, and only the third to do it in successive years, as a junior and senior … also twice All-Louisiana first-team … Southland Conference Freshman of the Year in 1996-97 when she led a rebuilding team in scoring (13.6), assists (6.2) and steals (1.9).
Stephanie Washington (women’s basketball, 1979-83) – Versatile athlete who ranks 20
th in scoring in Lady Demon basketball history (1,222 points, 101 games, 12.1 ppg), ninth in career shooting aim (48.8%) although she was a 5-8 guard … 40 points vs. Southern in 1982, 34 points vs. ULM in 1982, 33 points vs. McNeese in 1982, 30 vs. LSU as a senior in 1983 … would have been a star if NSU had track and field at that point, had an 11.0 100m time at Montgomery HS.
Britiany Cargill (soccer, 1998-2000) – Three-time first-team All-Southland Conference selection and the 2000 Southland Player of the Year and SLC Tournament MVP … led Lady Demons to 2000 NCAA Tournament … first-team All-Louisiana in 2000, when NSU won the Southland Conference regular-season and tournament championship and finished 15-8, 10-2 in the Southland.
Missy Payne (soccer, 1998-2001) -- Three-time All-Southland Conference selection, twice second team (1999, 2001) and first team as a junior in 2000 when the Lady Demons made their first NCAA Tournament appearance … the midfielder played in 58 games, starting 57, and scored 35 points with 8 goals and nine assists … had game-winning goals in consecutive conference games to help NSU win the 2000 Southland regular-season and tournament championships … her senior class never had a losing season despite being in a young program that began in 1996 … also competed in cross country, a sport whose season was concurrent with the soccer season.
Matt Donner (baseball, 1994-95) – Two-time first-team All-Southland third baseman for two straight conference championship teams under coaches Jim Wells and Dave Van Horn … his career .366 batting average is sixth best all-time at NSU … 103 career RBI is ninth … Demons were 82-30 in his two seasons and reached NCAA Tournament with an at-large invitation in 1994 … he is one of only two consecutive first-team All-Southland players from the 1990s not already in the N-Club HOF.
Bob Kairis (baseball, 1987-88) – Set Demons’ single-season strikeout record as a pitcher in 1987 (102, now sixth all-time) and topped that by one (103, fifth all-time) as a senior … his 205 Ks tied the then-school career record … won 7 games in 1988, going 7-4 with a 3.72 ERA and walked 24 in 81.2 innings … played in all but two games in 1987, pitching (3-6, 5 saves in 21 appearances, 9 starts) while also being a starting centerfielder (hit .304, tops on the team, with 45 hits, 11 doubles) … struck out 11 LSU batters in a 1987 game … tied for 10th all-time with 6 career saves … was a first-team All-Southland Conference pick as a pitcher in 1988 … drafted by Cleveland (23
rd round, 1988) and was the Indians’ minor league player of the year in his first year as a pro.
Gary Johnson (baseball, 1964-67) – Pitcher who had a dynamic senior season, going 10-0 out of nowhere … helped the Demons win their first-ever Gulf States Conference title, and reach their first-ever NCAA Tournament (college division) under coach Jack Clayton and assistant Herbie Smith … not even mentioned in a season preview, Johnson set school records with 10 wins, a 1.000 winning percentage, and three shutouts … 10 wins wasn’t bettered until 1994 and remains tied for second in school history …three shutouts in a season is tied for third all-time … presumably he was Gulf States Conference Pitcher of the Year.
David Reynolds (baseball, 1983-85) – Three-year starting shortstop who played seven seasons of minor league baseball, the last six as a pitcher, reaching Class AA level in his last three seasons … All-TransAmerica Conference and All-Louisiana as a freshman (.274 batting average, 6 home runs, 34 RBI) … a 22
nd round MLB Draft pick (553
rd overall) in 1985 after posting a .266 average with 2 HR and 26 RBI for NSU, he had a pro record of 36-28 with a 3.47 ERA and 22 saves in the White Sox organization, appearing in 202 games on the mound and another 37 in the infield and outfield.
Cindy Leggett (softball, 1997-2000) – Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year in 1999, going 13-4 in conference games for the Lady Demons’ conference champions … her career 45 wins ranks seventh in school history … 1998 All-Southland Tournament team … threw a no-hitter in 2000 vs. Belmont.
Gay McNutt (softball coach, 1995-2000) – Coached Lady Demon softball to its first two NCAA Tournament appearances (1998, 2000) in a three-year run of consecutive Southland Conference championships (1998-2000) …. Her six-year record was 161-170, including 112-55 (.671) in the last three years before Southern Mississippi, coming off a Women’s College World Series appearance, hired her … snapped a skid of five straight losing seasons in the breakthrough year of 1998 (40-18, 23-3 in the Southland) … posted a winning Southland record (14-12) in a fourth-place league finish a year earlier as the program turned the corner … was 92-68 (.575) in Southland play.
Jennifer Owens (softball, 1996-98) – First-team All-Southland pitcher for the 1998 Lady Demons’ first NCAA Tournament team, which went 40-18, won the conference with a 23-3 record, and played in the Seattle Regional … sixth in school history with 489.2 innings pitched … threw two no-hitters, both in Southland play, against SFA in 1997 and SLU in 1998, almost exactly a year apart (3/22/97, 3/21/98) … one of only two pitchers in school history, along with Crista Miller (4 ½), with multiple no-hitters … made 1998 NCAA All-Regional team … did not play her senior season.
Shannon Straty (softball, 1997-2000) – A three-year All-Southland conference catcher … first-team All-Southland in 1999, second-team in 1998 and 2000 … helped NSU win three straight Southland Conference championships in 1998, 1999 and 2000 … third-best single-season fielding percentage (.998, 1997) in school history … batted .302 for her career, 4

Linnette Stuart (softball, 1997-2000; track and field, 2001) – A four-year All-Southland Conference outfielder and the 2001 Southland champion in the javelin (141-8) … her career .331 batting average from 1997-2000 is fourth-best in school history, and set a school record at the time … her career 78 stolen bases also set a school record, and now ranks fourth … a dynamic defensive player … was second-team All-Southland in 1997, 1998, and 2000, first-team in 1999 … started 199 games, fourth all-time at end of her career … her 115 runs were 2

Distinguished Service Candidates
Dr. David Bedard – All-American gymnast for the Demons in 1966-68, and twice national tumbling champion in the NAIA, Bedard served as athletic director at Centenary from 2000-03 and significantly moved the Gents into the Division I Mid-Con Conference … after earning a master’s degree at NSU in 1972, he was NSU’s gymnastics coach 1973-77 … following obtaining his doctoral degree from Texas A&M, Dr. Bedard was a professor at Centenary 1981-2005, and has been professor emeritus since 2005 … he served in Vietnam from 1968-71 with the U.S. Army.
Louise “Do” Bonin – One of the original 13 recipients of state’s first athletic scholarships for women at NSU in 1975 … was a highly successful high school basketball coach at Dodson and Leesville, then coached at Nicholls and became senior woman administrator there.
Dr. Guy Hedrick – Academic All-America first-team and honorable mention All-Southland Conference fullback in 1992 who has become a successful dentist (Tioga Dental) … played quarterback, wingback, tight end and running back from 1989-92 for Coach Sam Goodwin’s Demons … graduated summa cum laude (3.91) and gave up his senior season (fifth year) of football to enter dental school … was the first NSU student-athlete to win first-team Academic All-America honors … career stats: 127 carries, 541 rushing yards, 9 TDs; 12-109 receiving; 14-36-2, 139 passing yards … named one of 13 honorary captains on the Demons’ all-century team in the 2007 centennial celebration as a tribute to his leadership and value to his teams.
Tommy Henry – Baseball player at NSC who served as LSHAA commissioner for 24 years, is in La. Sports Hall of Fame.
Melvin Howard – first African-American Demon football player in 1968, his only season with the program … rose to the ranks of Captain in New Orleans city police department and is now in that position in Orleans Sheriff’s office.
Billy Montgomery – former freshman basketball player for Demons in early 1960s who won two state titles as a basketball coach, became a 20-year state legislator and was the 2011 La. Sports Hall of Fame’s Dave Dixon Louisiana Sports Leadership Award winner … remains an avid supporter of Demon basketball and NSU concerns.
Angela Ortega – A two-year starter (1987-89) for Coach James Smith’s Lady Demons, Ortega is the assistant athletics director for women’s basketball operations at Texas, preparing for her eighth season … among her roles is scheduling, which has resulted in a continuing series of guarantee games benefitting her alma mater’s program … the Lady Longhorns have been rebuilt into a Top 25 program and an annual NCAA Tournament entry during her tenure … was previously an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for 19 seasons at North Texas and Charlotte … the fiery east Texan became a fan favorite and team leader whose pregame speech became the inspiration for the 31-year-old “Don’t Die Wondering Golf Classic” fundraiser … led Lady Demons to an at-large invitation to the 1989 NCAA Tournament, the program’s first NCAA appearance, while NSU won 38 games … she finished her career 10
th in career free throw aim.
Rob Robertson – Demon fullback whose modest stats (724 career rushing yards, 9 TDs; 251 yards, 4 TDs as a senior) don’t reflect his key role on the 1997 Southland Football League co-championship team that reached the FCS playoffs … went on to make the Baltimore Ravens roster in 1998, was injured, ultimately ending his career … he was recently named Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Region 12 Manager for Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, and has also assumed a role with the Ravens in their Alumni Relations department … … named one of 13 honorary captains on the Demons’ all-century team in the 2007 centennial celebration as a tribute to his leadership and value to his teams.
Robert “Skeeter” Salim – A tennis letterman from 1968-72 who has become a highly successful attorney with offices in Natchitoches and Houston, Salim’s support of Demon baseball has been pivotal for over two decades, resulting in significant facility enhancements and more … also a significant supporter of men’s and women’s basketball through the years … Salim’s engagement with Demon baseball began in the John Cohen era and his involvement was vital to the renovations of Brown-Stroud Field led by Cohen in 2000, and improvements large and small since … Salim has also rallied other community leaders to become involved with the program … has been actively involved in youth baseball in Natchitoches as well as with the Special Olympics … selected as one of the 100 Top Trial Lawyers determined by the American Trial Lawyers Association, and named to America’s Top 100 High Stakes Litigators.
